This is why they do it. Even with loose ones even more available they do it simply to annoy other people. People are free to do whatever they want with their collection, and if you were to open it nobody here would even know or care about it unless you decided to run to your computer and start trying to taunt people with different collecting styles than your own. The OP asked for advice and both sides gave their opinion. Hopefully the insight given here will be enough to help him make up his mind.
Now, I want one to open, and you would like one sealed, would you trade me the loose one PLUS $200 cash? $175 cash? What about the loose complete Skystriker, a loose complete Whale, loose complete tomahawk, and a loose complete Rattler if they were all going for $300 combined loose? |

Open it , leave cold front in the bag and have him AFA graded and sell. Then with the proceeds from the AFA cold front buy a loose complete cold front. It will probably get you your original $50 back and you will have a mint complete vehicle and figure for free. Not to mention the joy of opening a 20 year old toy.
As for the historical value of mib joe stuff, sorry that market has been tainted for awhile now. Most of the good stuff is already in private collections, most of which will not be for sale until some very wealthy collectors die. Sorry GI Joe collecting is mostly a blue collar hobby, thats why the market constantly goes down. Thanks to the 25th anniversary it probably won't totally recover. If you want an investment buy Google, if you want a toy collection open your toys |

Likewise, most JOE vehicles are readily available on eBay most of the time in mint complete condition. One may have to be a little patient to get what one wants, but again there is no need to open a MISB ARAH toy. More than one person wrote that if they had a MISB Skystriker, they would open it. I will trade two of my restored Skystrikers and $100 to anyone who has a MISB one and has plans to open it. I'm not saying Joes are Etruscan artifacts or an Albrecht Durer painting, but the dwindling MISB and MOSC examples should be preserved. |

Ok, let me ask you this. Say I bought a MISB Skystriker and was lucky to pay $75. Say it currently sells for $300 in this MIB condition. You have a mint loose one that for the moment sells for $60 loose.

Wow, what a snotty statement. Way to build unity within the JOE hobby. Shadowsun, you come off as a real jerk with the above line. I am alomost exclusivly a mint loose collector, but have a few of my favoirtes MISB/MOSC. I don't exactly writhe, but I think its a damn shame. Rotting in a cardboard box. Right. If the toy is so rotten why do you want to open it? Last edited by jaimanstone; 12-21-2008 at 12:52 PM.. |

My point is, it only matters what the other party thinks what it's worth. 1 person would see that deal as a no brainer (the one getting all 4 items) whereas some would think "4 complete items for 1 boxed item?"
Personally, I wouldn't trade away the 4 for 1, but would take the 4 for 1. Unless it's something like 4 things for the Flagg. Of course, even though I say I would open a MISB item, I would first try to find a trade that better suits my collection and needs. So I say try to get the max worth (items, not just money) out of a sealed item. It's the best way to go. |

I would never have opened my MISB Pogo if I hadn't kept getting outbid on the opened ones. I'm not made of money and can only afford a certain amount.
I was bidding on 4 Pogos at the time when I saw the MISB Pogo for $25 ($5 more than my current bids on open ones) So I bought it, still hoping I would get an opened one, but I didn't, so I opened the one I did get. Don't blame me for ruining history, lol, blame the others for outbidding me all the damn time, haha.

I do want a toy collection. I have a toy collation. I refuse to open my MOSC figures. I have an original Low-Light and a Viper. Why should I open those figures? I already have loose examples. Not to mention that ANY day of the week during any given month it is possible to get either of those figures on eBay mint and complete with card.
Likewise, most JOE vehicles are readily available on eBay most of the time in mint complete condition. One may have to be a little patient to get what one wants, but again there is no need to open a MISB ARAH toy. Look carded figures from the early part of the line are a slightly different story. By opening them you are losing your investment I agree, but with that said the o-rings will most likely break inside the package within the next 10 years or so. Also sometimes the O-ring fuses to the figure in which case it is a damaged toy MIB. In my opinion that would drop even pristine examples of either of those figures down to about a $35 price tag. However we are talking about a vehicle that is more commonly found MIB then loose complete. This is why cold front can go well over $100 AFA uncirculated. The box in question is from what I see from the pics a 7.5 at best and he bought it for loose price. Also believe it or not if enough moisture has gotten into the box these could yellow without proper preservation, sometimes you can preserve a toy better by shedding the box. I'm sorry to all the MIB and MOC collectors out there but Joes just were not made to stand up to the test of time packaged. Although I will play devils advocate and also state that anyone who would open a sealed defiant would be a fool, because many sealed ones have proven to contain badly damaged contents. It's a double edged sword in some cases, I just believe based on what I have seen and read in this thread this Avalanche is an opener. I also should say I was an avid MOC collector who lost way to much money due to broken O-rings. And I also have found the easiest cheapest way to get most post 1990 stuff is to buy it packaged and just open it. I was also not reccomend opening a 9.0 example or better More than one person wrote that if they had a MISB Skystriker, they would open it. I will trade two of my restored Skystrikers and $100 to anyone who has a MISB one and has plans to open it. I'm not saying Joes are Etruscan artifacts or an Albrecht Durer painting, but the dwindling MISB and MOSC examples should be preserved. |

Wow all this fuss whether to open the toy or not.......I say open it.
By the way, I purchased an original Jedi Shuttle a few years back for $400.00 It was sealed and the box was a c9.5, it was damn near perfect. Guess what, I OPENED IT! I wanted a dead mint shuttle and I got it. By the way, I still have it and it,s cool knowing that I am the only one to have ever touched it besides the factory worker. |
