The first Creator Profile has arrived: Kirk Bozigian!
I am thrilled to share the very first creator profile with you all! This process started over a month ago with an hours long interview at Kirk's house. His creator profile features dozens of audio clips, photos and scans, and covers his entire run on G.I. Joe! Kirk was arguably the most influential contributor to G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. He worked on the brand since before the big launch in 1982 and served on and off through 1994, the last year A Real American Hero was on shelves. Head on over to Kirk's page for a look at the very first Creator Profile! Kirk Bozigian - 3DJOES Two more profiles are currently in development, so stay tuned to learn more about Ron Rudat and Guy Cassaday! |

Why does Kirk say they came out with Star Brigade to pre-empt Kenner's relaunch of Star Wars? Wiki says Hasbro bought Kenner in 1991. So why would they still be competing with Kenner 3 years later?
This link on Bludd's page is going to the wrong audio clip: Kirk posits a diabolical theory for why Bob Prupis made kids cut the faces off of the Joes to redeem them for Major Bludd. Last edited by JediJones; 02-06-2015 at 12:56 AM.. |

It's a great interview. Would you provide an option to hear the whole thing unedited? I think it's great to have the snippets on each individual toy page but it would be nice to hear it all, especially since I'm not sure if anything was said in the interview that didn't make it into the clips.
I'm sure there are companies with internal competition between departments. Not everyone can be employee of the month for one thing. But it seems pretty unhealthy to actively have one department working to undermine another department. If I was owner of Hasbro I wouldn't want that kind of tihng going on. Most likely, Kirk delayed Star Wars by 2 to 2 and a half years at most since Star Brigade was 1993 and POTF2 was definitely 1995. Even from other interviews it's a little unclear to me whether Rudat designed all of the 1987 figures. I'm pretty sure the Pythona concept art that surfaced a while back was his. But the 1987 movie only had a limited array of 1987 characters and was I think supposed to debut in 1986. So it might have been like Revenge of Cobra in late 1984 which had some 1985 characters in it. I know I've seen Dave Dorman concept art of 1988 figures like Toxo-Viper. But do you how many of the 1987 figures Rudat designed? One really key question still to be resolved for me is the extent of Stephen King and his son's involvement in Crystal Ball and Sneak Peek. I even asked King's son on FB and he said he wasn't comfortable getting into the details. It doesn't look like you got into that topic in this interview but if you get another chance I'm curious about that. What I think we know is that Stephen King or his son wrote the Crystal Ball file card and that Sneak Peek appears to have his real name and hometown named after King's son and was probably facially modeled after him. I think the rumor is also that King or his son first created a character that could see into the future. So I speculate that Sneak Peek was a suggested name for that character, but instead they went with Crystal Ball, and then they redesigned a Joe based around the name Sneak Peek (necessitating creation of the periscope accessory). It'd be great though to get the true story on this and find out who really created and designed these characters and their backstories and why or how the Kings got involved. Of course, since Kirk wasn't fully on the brand in 1987 and I'm not sure what Rudat's involvement in designing the 1987 figures was, I'm not sure if either of them would know the full story. Do we know who did manage the brand during Kirk's off years? Another thing I'm unclear of is why the Rocky figure was cancelled. Kirk made it sound like they just didn't want to compete with or inadvertently promote the competing Rambo figures. Was it Hasbro's call or did they actually not have the rights to use Stallone's likeness because of the Rambo deal? It now sounds like Stallone himself was not the one who stopped the deal from going down. Last edited by JediJones; 02-07-2015 at 05:42 PM.. |

I'll answer these to the best of my ability, but I'm no more an expert than any of the Joe die-hards. I was just privileged enough to meet these guys and conduct an in dept interview with them. Here's what I know...

First, Kirk Bozigian confirmed that the Tiger Force was inspired by the NATO Tiger Meets, where the NATO jets are painted like tigers (more on the annual Tiger Meet here: NATO Tiger Association - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ). Then Joe Touart found a picture of a German supplied Portuguese FIAT G.91R-3 Air Force jet from 1987. (more info on the 1980's Força Aerea Portuguesa and the original photo can be seen here: Força Aerea Portuguesa ). The similarities between the Tiger Rat and this Portuguese jet were unmistakable: white nose with three whisker dots, brown around the mouth, yellow all the way back.... I was 99% certain this is THE jet that inspired the Tiger Force deco. Then Kirk confirmed that Greg Berndtson (who designed Tiger Force) had that same photo hanging on his office wall! It's pretty cool that a couple Joe nerds and the internet could connect all those dots 25 years later! Kirk Bozigian - 3DJOES |

Cool jet. To me the Tiger Rat is the single best piece in all of Tiger Force. The design really works on that one beyond anything else. So it isn't surprising at all that the design originated on a real-world jet.
Glad you got the detailed info on the 1987 line. So it looks like he did not do the following: Battle Armor CC, Croc Master, Fast Draw, Outback, Sneak Peek, Techno-Viper, Tunnel Rat, Royal Guard, Nemesis Enforcer, BF 2000 and 9 of 10 vehicle drivers. Which means Rudat either left the line before the movie was really started in production, or was working concurrently with another designer at that time. I definitely wonder about the guy who managed the line during 1985 and 1986. He was no slouch either. And his greatest achievement was perhaps producing the massive playsets during that time. |

Yeah, he was a little fuzzy on Croc Master. Wasn't sure so I'm not going to add it to his list. Golobulous was one of his last figures, so the movie had to be in production at that time.
As for the playsets, I've got a few names and credits but I need to do some more digging on those. For now I'm working through Ron and Guy's profile pages and then I'll try to nail down some more interviews. Fun stuff, kinda feel like a historian. Dan Klingensmith Jr. has been working in the same direction. He's working on a book: https://www.facebook.com/3.75InchJoe Be sure to check that out for more of this kind of info. |
