1990 as the oringal poster. I was also 12 entering 7th grade and started getting into girls & metal...and other things. Sold off all of my Joes and G1 Transformers in 96 only to start collecting SW in 01. Went back and picked up all the G1Formers, but never went back to reclaim my vintage Joes which is why I love this line so much. Plus it's saving me money not going backwards especially since Hasbro has been releasing the vehicles.

1988..... I was consumed with baseball at this point. My dad gave em all to the good will. Saw the 25th line and brought back all of the good memories and can't stop now.

I started collecting in February 1982 and continued all the way up until December 1991.
I remember receiving some Joes as Xmas novelty gifts in '91. The "Voice Commander" Hawk and Stalker, plus the "Sonic Fighter" Zap. I picked up a few figures from the mini-wave that came out around that time: BMX Snake-Eyes, dark-haired Low-Light and the second version of Mercer. Just the older characters, out of nostalgia. I had been picking figures up as mostly collectibles from about 1989 on... but I began to notice that they were becoming more "toy-oriented". With firing weapons and other stuff that REALLY made me feel immature. I worked in retail in 1992 and I remember stocking the shelves with the new 1992 "BattleCorps" and "DEF" figures. I thought: "wow, this stuff has really passed me by". I stopped buying vehicles around 1988 or so. I had picked up just about everything to that point, but began to cut back due to space limitations and duplicate/recycled ideas. I would still pick up a few vehicles that I thought were cool or unique-- like the Hammer or Thunderclap. But stuff like the Retaliator helicopter or the Cobra Hammerhead? Pass.

i only stoped when joes were not released so that would be 1995, 1996, 1999 other than these years i have ben there all the way. but for some reason i did get three or four sgt savage guys and the two iron klaws. also i have a ton of sigma 6 too, i think im just crazy for joes. i keep up the hunt for them and buy tons of the classic ones all the time, most of the time i have a joe or two in my pocket, thay go on missions to find more joes. i could go on but i pass.

1987. Falcon, Tunnel Rat, Battle Armor Cobra Commander, Crystal Ball, and Psyche-Out were my final figures.

1990/going into Junior High... Couldn't get past the outragous types of vehicles that were just way too impossible to be realistic. The Neon stuff and complete departure from anything even close to the real military. All I wanted was a realistic Hummvee for my Joes with a TOW missile on it in desert camo. An M1 and a Bradley would have been cool too but instead we got something different.
Oh yeah, and I got to play with my first set of boobs around that time too. |

Around 1992 When I realized that Hasbro had reached the bottom of the barrell and started producing nothing but crap figures. The goofy gimmicks and unecessary, oversized neon weapons were the end for me. I collected a few of the re-hashed figures of the early 2000's and tried the Joe v Cobra re-envisioning but both quickly lost their initial appeal. Everyhting up til the
25th/Modern line was pointless IMO. Now I'm like a kid all over again. Of course, it's open to interperetation as to whether I've grown up at all.

Whatever year Alley Viper and Night Viper and H.E.A.T Viper came out; and it wasn't that I wanted to stop collecting it was just that the figures were crap after that. There was one Arctic G.I. Joe guy that came with a Kayak; that was the last G.I. Joe figure that even remotely interested me.
Had the figures been better I probably wouldn't have stopped for another few years because I didn't stop buying toys every now and then when I reached Junior High; I just stopped buying G.I. Joe. |
