I "got out of" playing with Joes in the summer of '86, I had all of the main series of figures, plus a vehicle or 2. The very last Joe thing I got as a kid was the Slaughter's Renegades 3 pack...not sure why I bought them, by the time they came out I was fully into comics, skateboarding, music, and wrestling. I opened them up and don't even recall playing with them, they just went right into the big box in the closet with all my other Joe stuff. Didn't want to keep them laying around in my room, in fears of friends seeing them and being like "you still play with toys?" Ehh...lame-ass peer pressure.

I never ditched the GIJoe line. The line ditched me in 1994, but we became friends again in 1997 and have been tight ever since.

Same hear. I never stopped collecting and as I got older and Ebay I was able to complete my ARAH collection to the point where I had every holy grail I wanted.
One thing that did stick out to me was 2008 when I got the Club BAT attack Cobra Commander v32 and thinking that he was the absolute pinicle of toys and the definitive version of CC to go along with Ver 23 Snake-Eyes who I thought just as highly of. COBRA COMMANDER (v32), YOJOE.COM | YoJoe.com: Dedicated to the G.I.Joe of the 80's, 90's and beyond! SNAKE EYES (v23), YOJOE.COM | YoJoe.com: Dedicated to the G.I.Joe of the 80's, 90's and beyond! Then Hasbro went and ruined it and made the Modern Era Articulation and spoiled me. Ah 2008 like it was yesterday. So I swore off for ARAH and now I have to have customs of all the figures I'm missing that they haven't made yet.

Last figure I bought. (I also got the Alley Viper from that year)
Last vehicle I bought. (I also had the Piranha from that year, but I'm pretty sure the Dictator was the last vehicle I got) My Joe-buying dropped of sharply after 1990. Mostly because I was getting heavily into the Toy Biz X-Men figures instead. |

ok, great thread. And a good way to relate my joe history.
I have 3 distinct periods of Joe collecting/ playing and have had three entire collections. I had Uncles, cousins who played with big joes, and had a HUGE plastic bag of figures vehicles and accesories that I played with constantly until my Parents bought a house and we moved waaaaay out into the woods when I was about 4 or 5, and for the couple of years between having that bag of big joe stuff and the small joes starting I would play GI joe with my star wars figures ect, and I remember my mother telling me that GI joe was coming back out "Next year" and were going to be Star wars figure sized and I was so excited, I asked who "He" ( joe) was going to fight and she said "Probably the veitnameese or middle eastern terrorists". So anyway I was ready and waiting when the 82 stuff dropped, I think I was about 7 YO when it happened. So anyway I full on into the culture and LIVED Joes up until about 88, I remember having pretty much all of the 87 characters, then was in the 8th grade in 88, playing in bands and playing football and being pressured to put it all away, but I have a brother a few years younger than me so I would stay into it through him, encourage him to pick up certain items, never really stopped playing joes with him, but by 89 I wasnt getting figures of my own anymore. I do remember my first real girlfreind gave zero fucks about the fact that I still played with joes, she would play WITH me and my brother, make up stories, go pew pew pew, the whole deal and we were 15 YO or so each. But then by about another year or so, my brother who was just like 13 at the time, started getting really good gigs playing music as well, started getting fucked up and Moms suggested we give our huge combined collection to our cousin who was just a couple years younger than my brother, I still remember going to our Aunts and uncles house years later and pining for my terror drome back. Anyway thats how Joe era #1 ends for me. Falcon was my jam BTW I remember he was like THE center of my collection and all my stories from the time he came out. Brotherman Had the Mamba and Maggot and I LOVED them, so ill call them our/ his/ my last items...Monica dug them as well. Ok So Second Era, in 1997 I was in a band, we had a rehearsal space we played and hung out in constantly, it was a studio/ mancave/ bar/ hangout. And we, as a band LOVED to do unexpected or ironic things like dress up as proffessional wrestlers or star wars characters on stage ect.... And some of the girls and people who would come over to rehearsals would "make fun" but actually encourage us, about the fact that we had toys, ( Old Star wars, a few joes, Mcfarland, anything interesting or funny) sitting all around the space, so when the TRU rereleases happened I started buying them, being that I loved joe and there was a socially acceptable outlet for it. It went over really well with the peer group, so much so thet every one who came around scrounged up their old joes, we would hit flea markets as a band on weekends and pick up a few items, until the point it was sublime, we had fleets of vehicles in various stages of completeness, armies of troop builders, MCC, General, hammerhead, two rolling thunders, two HISS IIs, like four almost complete skystrikers, a few Dragon flies, two Mambas, two Night ravens just a massive insane collection. We were adding Maistro ect cycles for 'noks, painting customs, making up characters with foul names and horribly uinappropriate made up file cards, all as grown ass men in a metal band, we werent doing it ironicly anymore, we were a secret joe play club ( cause by god we would tie on a buzz and ALL get down and PLAY with all of that). This was before any of us were realy even into the internet. We had a policy for gals, if you dont play joe, you cant come to the game room. This stayed going until 2002 when my Mother died of cancer, the insurance company retroactively cancelled her policy due to " pre existing condition" and forclosed on all of their property, the studio was on a peice of property tied to one of their leins so the bank took it. I was away at Fort Rucker at the time the bank finally took all of the stuff from the game room, including the Joe collection, I remember calling everyone I can think of and begging them to go to the old place, break IN IF YOU HAVE TO and GET THOSE JOES. but alas it was not to be, the bank sold a lot at estate and burned what didnt sell at the landfill. Thus ends the second glorious era of joes in my life and the SECOND loss of a huge awesome collection. When I left I did take my personal ( no one else had pitched in) star wars collection with me, and kept it going, slowly adding perfected versions of all the main characters and vehicles, the 25th Joes came and went but my finances meant even "keeping up" with Star wars was a chore so I pushed the pain of TWO colletions of joes lost out of my head. But then It was a female who got me back into it again. About the time my son was born, I was getting to the point where I was " done" with my star wars coillection, I had all the main characters from all 6 films, and had army built screen accurate armies of pretty much everything except phase one plain white clones, I mean I have about 60 but there are like 1200 visable in that one scene on kamino and thats just not happenin. So I had "room" in my budget and heart for joes again, and thats when she did it, she saw the Hazard viper, just thought it was super cool and didnt care what toy line it came from, my wife wanted it, so she picked it up, we played with it that night, I dug around in my music gear and found a Rock and roll V2, and a Downtown and a hardball, two cobra troopers from my (1997?) trooper 6 pack. And It_Was_Back_ON. We went back the next day and picked up 30th Viper, Cobra trooper Steel brigader, Stalker..... and Ive been full on back in since then, army building a new articulation Cobra, the best ( in my opinion) version of each main character in the new style ( still workin on it) and picking up some modern vehicles and a bunch of vehicle lots on ebay. Im now working on Gi Joe collection number three and plan on, like my Star wars one, perfecting this into " my Ultimate set" of the chracters vehicles and scenery that I have loved and enjoyed through so much of my life. And thats joe collection number three, three or four ( depending on how I pack it away) platic storage bins full of modern figures and 82-88 or so vehicles, some retaliation stuff, some 25th vehicles, a lot of custom building I make out of cardboard and spray paint, and scenery I can fdind that fits with real world 3 3/4 stuff. And Thats collection #3, hopefully the one I pass on when Im gone. |

I never really stopped collecting. If it had The gijoe logo I would buy it. But not to excess, I worked two jobs while I was in high school so I had a lot of extra money coming in.
I liked the Sgt. Savage stuff when I was in high school but never opened those. I bought a few of the Gi joe extreme figures and some of the 12" joes that were being released. The Joe vs. Cobra stuff was the last toys I bought until the 25th line was released. I have a few MIB BTR vehicles including the (raging typhoon), just waiting for my kid to get old enough so he can play with those. I wish I could get all the BTR stuff, I've heard they are crap but I'm sure it'd be cool to help him put them together.
