I bought them out of my paycheck. No, I didn't Army build, one of each was enough. I was like, 25 years old when they started coming out (though I didn't start collecting until about 4 years later).

I usually got the vehicles at birthday and christmas time. They would single wrap or even double two together and wrap them. I think one year my mother folded the cards in half so you coouldn't tell what they were wrapped. Other times, if I got good grades, I got 1 or 2. Saved up my allowance as well used LAYWAY. I got all my joes at TRU, ToyBox, Montgomery Ward, Best Products, Service Merchandise, or a local store called Winns.
All the above stores are closed except TRU. |

I would get mine from Payless Drugs (now Rite Aid), Fred Meyers, K-Mart, Sears and later TRU. My biggest memory was going to K-Mart with my mom and friend. I saw a Spirit and a couple others. I remember my friend wanted Spirit, but I wanted him every since I saw him on the back of the package. I ended up getting him, and I can't remember who my friend got. We then went to my grandma's and played Joes in her backyard all day. I usually got my joes for being good or chores. I would get my bigger vehicles for Christmas and birthdays.

Got paid for grades, chores, and getting my parents and grandparents to buy them. Especially useful if you could show how freaking cool the USS Flagg was, which it was absolutely cool. My dad built a toy room for me out of the attic that was next to my bedroom just so I could display it all the time.

I'd usually get a modest assortment for Christmas (3 figures and a medium vehicle) and maybe a bit less for the birthday. After that I mowed a hella lotta lawns to buy Joes. Then, I'd ride my bike 5 miles or so to Walmart and buy a guy or two (I'd stop at my friend's house midway for a breather and try to con him into the trip). I can still remember the trek to pickup Flint & Bazooka back in '85.
One more: I remember saving lawn mowing money big time for the Terror Drome. Too big to tote on my bike, I got my mom to take me. "Are you sure you want to spend all your money on this?" she asked. Yeah right! Yellowed and busted up, I've still got that thing. |

My parents gave me $5 a week allowance and then if I did extra stuff like mow the yard, clean the house etc.. I also earned a little more.
I also mowed my neighbors yard and I was a wheeler and dealer at school I would go buy really cool pencils on the weekends at like the college book stores and then sell them at school for like a buck a piece. I rarely had more than one of the same figure but I also managed to collect nearly every vehicle and accessory. There were a few that I had more than one of because of trading and such. I used to save all my file cards and a lot of the boxes too.. for awhile anyway til I ran out of space. I also was a frequent user of Wal-Mart's Laway plan. And if I couldn't buy something or put it in Laway I would often Hide it in the Barbie Isle or somewhere else that I knew wouldn't see much coverage for a few days, then I'd come back and buy it when I had the money. My Friend and I were always at a race to see who could find the next Paper/Mini Catalog first and then of course it was a race to see who could get what first... That what really fueled my passion was that my Friend and I had a contest to see who could get what first, it was like a Treasure hunt every weekend. Sometimes if another kid had a Joe that I really wanted but he wouldn't give it up I'd ask him what he wanted for it.. it was usually like a Transformer.. which I also was in to but not quite as much as GI Joe. So I'd find what he wanted to trade and then get the Joe. Man those were the Days... I SOOOooo wish I had my collection. When I was 18 I decided that I was a man and had to get rid of all my childish things... Silly me. Sold the whole lot for $150.. Four years later I was buying Toys again.. LOL

I got a few G.I.Joe's from my parents on special occasions or sometimes on a long trip. They were the cheapest action figures at Fl.10 each vs other figures which were Fl.20 each. After I got an allowance, the only special occasions left were Birthdays, Sinterklaas & Christmas. I bought most figures from that allowance.
It's funny how I used to choose joes that either had a lot of accessories or looked more army based. Realistic weapons were a big plus as well. Unfortunately I barely saw any of the pre 1986 figures for sale. Here is the complete list of what I had as a kid: G.I.Joe - A Real American Hero (1982-1994) Hasbro Shipwreck v1 Quick Kick v1 Jinx v1 Lightfoot v1 Spearhead & Max v1 Countdown v1 Downtown v1 Stalker v2 (with Kayak) Ambush v1 Grunt v3 Blizzard (Tiger Force) European Exclusive Outback (Tiger Force) European Exclusive Altitude v1 (Sky Patrol) Law v2 (Sonic Fighters) Ozone v1 (Eco-Warriors) Sgt. Slaughter v3 (Warthog Vehicle Driver) Ghostrider v1 (Phantom X-19 Pilot) Maverick v1 (Battle Force 2000) Clutch v3 (Mega Marines) Dojo v1 (Ninja Force) Dr. Mindbender v1 Tomax & Xamot v1 Techno Viper v1 Big Boa v1 Croc Master v1 Raptor v1 Frag-Viper v1 T.A.R.G.A.T. v1 Undertow v1 Destro v4 (Star Brigade - Armor-Tech) G.I.Joe Check Point Alpha Tower Cobra Pogo Ballistic Battle Ball Phantom X-19 Stealth Fighter Warthog A.I.F.V. [Amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle] Battle Gear Accessory Pack #5 G.I.Joe Battle Gear Accessory Pack #6 Cobra |
