I may not be as old as the original collectors here, (I'm 20) I remember getting Joe's or any other type of figure very well. I grew up in Queens, New York and while my father was at work in Manhattan, we would make trips to the liquidators and tru's all the time. My mother came from humble beginnings in Brooklyn and felt that she would spoil her children with the most my father and her could provide to make us happy with all of the things they never had.
Toys R Us was and will continue to remain my Eden. I remember so well driving up to the tru's and basically running out of the car dodging traffic in the parking lot just because I felt that there may have been some really cool new Joe I had never even heard of before and that there was only 1 left and if I didn't expend all of my energy to get into the store that rare Joe would be gone. The excitement of getting to the Joe isle was like nirvana. I can honestly say 17-15 years later that feeling has ceased to subside. But whose to say that all of my other emotions weren't put on hold. I remember being so excited to get Joe's that I completely ignored the urge to urinate, that having been said, I pissed my pants in the isles of Toys R Us at the age of 10. My younger brother being the asshole he is told everyone in the store. Anyway, I remember getting everybody, vipers, head hunters, you name it. I used to rely on report cards heavily though. Once we moved to the suburbs of New Jersey, I can remember that almost sunday morning my father would go out to get bagels for us and he would always return with a Joe or a street fighter figure. I was real big on those too. But yeah those were the days. I'm at college now and whose to say my mother and father don't surprise me with one when I come home or when the come to visit. I don't keep them at school, because I'm pretty sure 18+ year old girls don't dig athletic guys with a GI Joe obsession. Thanks for reading and Great topic! |

Yup, Christmas and Birthdays were the best because that's the only time I got vehicles and stuff. But that was such a short period of time because once Nintendo came out all I wanted was video games for Christmas... All my G.I. Joes could walk after that. LOL. |
