Started out as a trip to the toy store back in the summer of 1982. Wanted Star Wars and spotted Joe for the first time. Life changed that day. Picked up Rock N Roll and Breaker and Star Wars took a back seat. Most of my first wave Joes (1982) I was lucky enough to get most for my Birthday and Christmas that year (It's all I asked for)
The next summer when Dad allowed me to use the lawn mower is when the fun really began. I must have cut everybodies lawn on my entire block. I would get about $10-$20 per lawn and if you remember the price of Joes back then...that bought a lot. Those first few years (1982-1985) I had everything.
A few years later (1988) I gave my entire collection away for no other reason then stupidity.

Great thread! I got almost all of my Joes for my B-day, X-Mas, Easter, Valentine's Day, Children's Day (look it up!), graduation gifts (every year of grade school) and even the Tooth Fairy. LOL, I think I was spoiled. I did get a few by spending my allowance money (this was towards the end of my Joe collecting days, though).

All of my Joes and vehicles besides 25th, Sigma 6, and VvV were hand-me downs from one of my cousins and/or my aunt, and my older brother's friend. I still remember getting that big bag of assorted Joe and Cobra figures. It was amazing.

If I recall, growing up in North Carolina meant that my allowance rate was something like $6 a week, which at Wal-Mart bought exactly 2 Joes/week.
They were $2.84 or so, with 6 cent sales tax. It was perfect. Vehicles meant I had to save up, or were reserved for birthdays or Christmas. RARELY did my parents buy any Joes if there wasn't an occasion.
We'd hit up Wal-Mart, Gold Circle(turned into Target after their buyout), Brendle's, K-Mart, Service Merchandise, and TRU was the Joe Mecca when I was a kid.
My parents would often hold TRU visits over my head, and I'd always try and trick them into taking me there. It was semi-out of the way, and there was no reason we'd have to go other than toys (not like my parents were regularly buying other things at toy stores, dammit).
I remember being like 7, and mad at my Mom because she wouldn't take me by when I'd been good (I promise!) and I told her "When I'm older and can drive, I'll go to any Toys R Us that I want to, whenever I feel like it!"
She rolled her eyes. Little did she know, I was a boy of my word.

My family was pretty poor so I had to save up my meager $1 per week allowance money (another $1 went in a savings account I didn't really want) for 3 weeks before getting a fig. My parents made up for it at Christmas though. That's my birthday too, so they'd go all out combining their money w/ money from both sets of grandparents and usually get me the bigger vehicles and more figs then. I'd usually get some stuff from other relatives as well.
I would also do odd jobs whenever possible to get more cash for Joes/smaller vehicles. I never got any of the really big stuff, but had more than enough to be satisfied and entertained.
I got most of my stuff at the K-Mart, Hills, Value City and Service Merchandise - when they carried toys around the holidays. Then we moved out to the boonies where we had to drive a half hour to get to Murphy's/Ames. Needless to say, I always tried to get my Joes where they were least expensive and I could get more for my money.

I originally got Stalker and a VAMP with Clutch (my first figures and Joes) from a family friend for my 5th birthday. From that point, I usually got about one or two a week on my own, with my allowance. I usually could get my mom to buy me one every now and then, especially when my little brother was born in '85, I could help her with him, and she'd hook me up
Birthdays were cool, as I would get 10-15 single carded figures and a few smaller-medium vehicles. Coolest memory ever was my dad bringing home a trashbag full of the complete 1984 series and some of the 85. Christmas was THE holiday, that's where I got the huge bases and vehicles. I also got most of my Transformers then too. Anyone remember the "Good Guy" and "Bad Guy" GI Joe packs from the old JC Penney/SEARS Wishbook catalogs? I was all over those! That's how I completed the 1986 line.
As far as where I got them from, I grew up in Germany, so it was mostly from the PX/Post Exchange on base. Sometimes a few German toy shops would have them, but they were more expensive. I remember turning my nose up at the Action Force stuff they had (now I'm kicking my own @ss for that, heh). When we moved to Texas in '88, I remember getting Nightforce in one clean sweep from Toys R Us.
Ah the memories...now I regret selling my vintage collection even more...thanks, lol!

I got mine from Chores, B-Day, X-Mas, Easter, good grades. It seemed like my dad would come home everyday with something new. He was an Arson Investigator with the Memphis Fire Department and was able to drive around and look for stuff in his down time. Man, those were the days.
The stores I would frequent include:
Target (Where I got my first Joe Figure and issue 1 of the comic) -Mart, Wal-Mart, The Treasury, Jefferson Ward, Zayre, Woolsworth, Walgreens, KayBee, Circus World, Sears, Dillards (Back when they had a toy Department), Ben Franklin, Service Merchandise and the grand Daddy of them all Children's Palace.
I had everything from 82-91 with the exception of the BIG 2, Flagg and Defiant.
Here's something to get all nostalgic about: A Sears catalog archive of the Action Figure sections
