I'm sure this has come up before, but a cursory search through the site netted me nothing, so I ask for help. I recently rescued some old joe vehicles and playsets from ten years of storage at my parents house and was wondering the best way to go about cleaning them. The worst offender is my Terror Drome which was too large to box up so it has a lot of dust. I tried a damp cloth but can't get into a lot of the small detailed areas. Tried canned air, but it just didn't seem to work too well. Does anyone have any great ideas of how to clean toys that have been in storage for far too long?

If EXTREMELY dusty, get canned air.
Use a dry Swiffer to get the rest off. I also use water damp paper towels, then a dry paper towel. For the corners and smaller area, q-tip... lots of q-tip. I also use a water spray bottle and high squirt, and blast the corners and hard to reach parts. |

I wouldn't recommend it to the skittish, but I tend to blast dirty old vehicles with hot water from the shower head. Worked well at cleaning my old Night Raven.

I clean them by putting them in the bathtub and use a tooth brush and some hand soap. Take it out let it drip dry and then wipe down and then a can of compressed air to remove any water from hard spots.

in case anyone is curious, I used mr clean magic erasers and they ARE AMAZING. they wipe away stained plastic and bring out the original color.
They also work on white shoes. just dont use the febreeze version lol. no need for joes to smell that good lol oh, and for stuff to big to box, cover with a giant plastic bag or something. Last edited by Dark 5cythe; 10-07-2008 at 06:11 PM.. |

Thanks for all of the ideas! I thought about using a hose, but I was worried that it would take the stickers off. Maybe I'll be brave with it and try that out.
I honestly didn't cover it when I stored it there because I thought it would be there for a couple of months - tops. Then life sort of got in the way. Let's just say I'm really glad to get back to a point where I can display my terror drome. And now I have some cool 25th anniversary figures to display with it! |
