A recent thread discussing some of the shortcomings of the U.S.S. Flagg inspired me thinking about how best to use it. I've always thought that the Flagg's biggest weaknesses are its small flight deck, as compared to the size of the Skystriker and most other Joe airplanes; and the fact that an aircraft carrier seems like too big a home for a small-ish unit like G.I. Joe.
But then I remembered a Tom Clancy book that I read many years ago, about a U.S. Marine Expeditionary Unit. As I recall from the book, an MEU is and air-ground unit of about battalion size, that can more or less operate independently from the amphibious assault ship that its based on. And the amphibious assault ship looks like a miniature aircraft carrier - actually, a lot like the Flagg. It has a small flight deck that launches helicopters and VTOL aircraft. And it can launch landing craft. Here is a Wikipedia entry on the older class of amphibious assault ships that were discussed in the book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarawa_...s_assault_ship I think the Flagg, with Tomahawks on the flight deck and a WHALE below, is a great amphibious assault ship. And I think that an amphibious assault ship makes a better home for the Joes than an aircraft carrier. Thoughts? |

AKA Helicopter Carrier. About the best use for it I can think of.

My brother's first station in the Navy was an amphibious Assault ship named the USS Essex. It actually made an appearance in one of the best FPS games of the 2000s, Battlefield 2. There was an actual level where you fought inside of it. There's also one used in a couple of Battlefield 3 maps, but I am not sure if it is still supposed to be the Essex or not.
I think it makes perfect sense for the JOEs.

I've been on a helicopter carrier before... they're still HUGE, lol! I was 15 or 16 years old living in San Francisco. I remember getting to hold an M-60 and could not imagine how Joes like Snake Eyes and Rock N Roll carry those things around in battle.
I was all excited to see the carrier in NYC harbor that's a museum now, but both times I was in NYC they were either moving it, or renovating it and so it was closed. Bummer.

I agree that even as an amphibious assault ship, the Flagg is underscaled. But it's certainly closer than the Flagg as an aircraft carrier. More importantly (at least for me), I think an amphibious assault ship makes way more sense for the Joes than an aircraft carrier does. In fact, it even makes sense that the Flagg would be an undersized amphibious assault ship. I recall the amphibious assault ship being designed to carry a reinforced Marine battalion. I imagine that the Joes would be at least a bit smaller than a battalion, so maybe they wouldn't need as big a ship. |

At 1:18 scale the thing would still be over 40 feet long if it were made to scale!

The Battlefield 2 map had an internal hanger deck with a few F-18s in it. It could still potentially hold some skystrikers. A toy version maybe not so much, but the real thing might be able to.

I wonder if this is what Larry Hama was drawing from when he wrote the Joe Comics with the GI JANE in them. I would love a toy so huge that it could swallow the WHALE in the bow like the JANE did in the comics.
