This a a VERY VERY easy build!!
Plexi glass OR real TEMPERED Glass and a frame made of wood. I can draw you blueprints very easy.
You have choice of dimensions, overall size, shape, etc etc. REMEMBER it doesn't have to just be a rectangle, it can have angles.
Also depending in how high you want this to sit, Deck just below eye level, a foot off the floor, etc etc.
You can add lights to it on a switch, black light for night scenes, etc etc

I don't think it would honestly be that hard to make a case, but i would use plexi glass because its lighter in weight and won't break so easily should you some how have an accident. But sheets of plexi glass that big could cost you some money.

Plexiglass is safer but to use it requires some real thinking in design to keep the pieces small enough to not have give in them or "flex".
If it's re-enforced properly large sheets can be manipulated to not "flex" as much but it's still difficult.
Plexiglass also is prone to scratching. Over time you know as well as I do it's gonna get scratched. So that's another thing to consider.
Tempered glass like what is used on real showcases, doors, and shelving is the most professional look HOWEVER expensive!
If you are building the showcase yourself the glass is def the main overhead cost BUT if this is a wall unit you are building that will be a permanent fixture it might be the best way to go.
I know someone that did something similar to our ideas here. AN old friend from childhoods dad was in the Navy. I believe he was on either the USS Enterprise, Kitty Hawk, or Independence.
Anyhow His pop built a model of the carrier with full air squadrons on deck and everything. He had it mounted on top of a 400 gallon fish tank!!
He had 2 submarines in the fish tank, divers, and it was crazy insane cool, but they also had money, his dad opened his own business as well after leavin the Navy.
That was a cool idea. Basically the carrier was built on a shelf that sat above the tank being for the most part the top, and under that was the underside of the carrier in the water.
I'm not telling anyone to try this because it is truly insane, AND if you haven't owned fish they are a LOT LOT LOT of work.
