I have not seen this posted yet so I wanted to ask what people think of the original G.I.Joe 82-83, 84,85, and some of 86.
It seems back in the days, when they made specific soldiers we were given Flamethrower, Heavy Machine Gunner, Bazooka trooper, Infantry trooper, Dog Handler, Warrant Officer, and so fowarth. They really only had a couple special forcers soldiers "commandos" like Snake Eyes. Somewhere in the late 80s/early 90's our popular culture came to learn more about special forces and that is kind of what we got for toys; things inspired by special forcers and such. Take Shipwreck for example. Before he was just a salty dog crass wisecracking sailor and in the TRU line in '97, they resurrected him into being a navy seal. Shipwreck was good the way he was! I am not complaining about that because they have made good characters about that. I just enjoyed them making "average Joe's" which as alluded to in the "Cold Slither" episode. I liked it because it showed more or less regular guys. That's what made Joe good! What do you guys think? Thanks! -M |

Every soldier, even the most elite are, at some point in their daily lives, regular guys, but that isn't directly your point.
If GI Joe, by definition, is a highly trained special missions force... that makes them special forces. Each "job" that GI did was to bring in a specialty. Like Snow Job, for snow missions (see how that works). It wasn't until the late 80s that people generally became aware of SOCOM units and what they do. Now that these things are more in the public eye, developers, such as those that created GI JOE, would have probably made GI JOE a bit more shaddy in terms of it's "elite-ness." Those folks simply didn't have a lot of information in which to base their idea of an elite special missions force to fight terrorism back then. Today, we know a bit about Delta Force, which is specifically used to do what GI Joe does. An elite, special missions forces designed to combat terrorism. Delta Force is doing what GI Joe is all about, combating terrorism (specifically) around the world. I think this is why i like the Reloaded version of GI Joe. They were above SOCOM. So much so that the members of GI Joe ceased to be "regular" folks. They gave up their lives, and only became their code names, with no government to aide them if they were captured. In very rare circumstances does our government cease to aide captured soldiers and operatives. Unlike Delta Force, whose primary mission it is to arrest most terrorists, GI Joe was given carte blanche. Although the government supported them, it was unofficial. Very 1960s CIA type stuff. It was interesting and really the only story territory a group like GI Joe could go anymore.
