Ive been digging through the internet looking at action figures old and new, Joes and not Joes and a thought struck me. This is from 2002:
Then in 2011 we got this: Nine short years and a hell of a difference, both in the figures themselves and what we've come to accept/expect from our toys. So here's my thought, if in less than a decade the quality has changed so much that we won't accept anything less than complex paint apps, insane amounts of accessories, and a ton of articulation, where will we be in another 10 years? Will the incredible Pursuit of Cobra line look like Spy Troops to us and future collectors, or have we reached the apex of what action figures can be? Seriously, how much better can we possibly expect? Maybe full working plastic endo-skeletons under realistic plastic flesh in 1/18 scale? Mini lab grown people that battle each other for our own amusement (this present horrible problems for MOC collectors). How many questions can I cram into this paragraph? lol So what are you're thoughts? Is what we've seen with POC or even non-Joe stuff like Star Wars and Marvel Legends/Universe as good as it gets or is there still the possibility for our beloved action figures to get even better? |

I like the old figures. Even though the first pic is not what I consider as old.

Don't misunderstand, Im not knocking the classics, and Im sorry if I came off that way. I still love me some G1 Transformer goodness even with the advancements made in recent years. This is more about peoples opinions on how much more action figures can improve if at all. Maybe I should have used an 80s or 90s figure for comparison, but you still have to admit there is a dramatic difference in what could be made between now and ten years ago.

I think articulation will get better, joints will remain tighter but move more freely while at the same time be more hidden/ less visible. Sculpts will become more aesthetically appealing and figures will be sturdier.

Just an example of what Im talking about, take Renegades Storm Shadow a highly desired figure considered by many to be the best version of the character to date. Ten years from now will we be looking at him and see him like we see older figures now, still pretty awesome but kind of lacking somehow compared to then current toys, or is it even possible to improve that much on what we have been getting now?

I dont think theres too much to improve articulation wise, at least in this scale (its prety effing great already!) but maybe some subtle changes like sneaking the extra wrist joints to all figures, or sculpting that might sacrifice a bit of detail in favor of range of motion (like having to shave early 25th figures elbows to get them to hold their gear).
I'd also bet that we will probably see a double jointed elbow eventualy.

I would like to see them add some soft goods to the line (for ninjas especially)...I would also like to see if they can have every single accessory removable (hand grenades, knives, canteens, radios, whatever)...so if the figure is taken captive he still doesn't have a knife that's molded...lol
Can't imagine articulation improving that much for a 3.75 figure but I do think that they can improve facial sculpts and plastic quality...based on what I've seen by customizers on the tank hell yea they can improve the sculpting!!! With that being said I am really fearful for the future of the line as globalization has taken its toll on the cost cutting measures we have seen in the figs...I guess we are going through a downward spiral of the business cycle so hopefully it will rebound in the not too distant future... |

I do not really care about the ankle moving. I just like an updated figure. |
