This has probably been done to death but whilst going through my boxes of figures I noticed to my horror that some of my ARAH figures have got some really bad cracked elbows. When I buy a figure I always check the whole thing over and if there's anything bad, i'll note it on the bag. I keep all my figures in good quality boxes in a wardrobe. So this has happened recently! I don't get it... basically the elbows are cracking even when they are not being played with stored in boxes. Anyone else had this happen?

As we've talked about before, many ebay sellers don't list that a figure has cracked elbows. I think many think played with condition covers it, however i haven't heard of any cracking from old age alone without being forced.
I'm getting paranoid about mine now, think i may have to have a check through my boxes later. :/

I have seen elbows split on MOC figures from the 88-90 era. So it is definitely from age, not just play. I mention it on ebay listing though, because some people dislike it. i think that split elbows might just be the next age issue after busted o-rings and discoloration.

Hi mate, yeah, it's scary. I only started to look at mine because you'd mentioned it. Mine seems to be cracking from age. My Fast Draw figure was always my favorite and I even stored it in a hard blister case, I went to check it and noticed that the left elbow had cracked, this is fresh as you can even see some sinue'y plastic between the pieces. Same for my Outback figure. So frustrating as I've sold both of those figures about 5 times each, now I need to buy another!
This does make you think about how much money we have invested in our collections, we all know how O rings rot with age, but if the actual figures are going to break down over time after being stored as carefully as possible. Very scary indeed! @Narius P - i know i have a junker Outback, maninly paint damaged torso and crotch, i think the arms may be ok, i'll check later tonight and let you know.

I collect WW2 bayonets, one big no no, concerning them and other WW2 collectables such as medals, is never wrap them in bubble wrap or plastic bags, as the petroleum content will damage the metal blueing, zinc finishes etc. As different plastic have different petroleum content, i've wondered if the content in plastic ziplock bags contribute to the ageing of O rings and the actual plastic of the figures?

I assume this problem is due to the plastic drying out. This has happened to many of my favorite figures from back in the day. I have read on the tank that some dudes use baby oil to clean thier figures. I think I might try this on some old junker figs I have and see if it hlps keep the plastic alive for more years. This is similar to a wood cutting board or bowl, you need to apply mineral oil to keep them from drying out and cracking. just my $0.02...

I've been through all the figures now, my casualties: Flint, Fast draw, Outback, AVAC :-( and a BAT. These figures definately were all perfect up to a month ago. Stored upright in ziplock food bags inside a plastic box in a wardrobe. |
