I bought a Joe online a year or so ago and I was livid that the elbow was cracked, but I got it cheap enough that I didn't complain. It's nice to know that it's a very common problem

Funny you mention that. I just bought Sky Striker about a week ago and he had two cracked elbows. Normally I would pass on something like that but the price was low and that is the only time I remember ever seeing him in the wild.

Man the pain it is I know this too well. I dunno about the yellowing though I think it depends on what kind of ziplock bag you use. I've had my Storm Shadow in a ziplock bag for 8 years now he is still white.

White cotton is indeed what is recomemded for storing daggers and bayonets, so that is better for your SS. I've just quickly checked over my complete figures, most look ok, however i bought a mint Blowtorch 6 months ago and he has a cracked elbow which definetly wasn't there before. This certainly does open a topic about displaying and storage. How many collections have we seen shown in plastic fishing tackle boxes or large storage tubs? Another WW2 collectors tip was never store you items in wooden drawers unless it is untreated maple. A lot of wood contains sap and never fully dries out, or something like that. Also if the wood is varnished, is a no no as that also causes a huge chemical reaction. How many collections are displayed on varnished shelves? It'll be interesting to hear from any AFA collectors, those sealed boxes must be full of chemical fumes rotting the enclosed figures.

Don't think you've got off scot free. There is a reason why they sell archival envelopes for rare documents. Even cardboard gives off a chemical reaction and can yellow paper and probably plastic.

Keep them out of the light too. Light degrades plastic.

As we've talked about before, many ebay sellers don't list that a figure has cracked elbows. I think many think played with condition covers it, however i haven't heard of any cracking from old age alone without being forced.
I'm getting paranoid about mine now, think i may have to have a check through my boxes later. :/ It seems to affect figures from '88-90 more so than earlier ones. You will see cracked elbows on pre-1988 figures from time to time - most often on those from '87, and certain ones in odd colours, like red or purple, it seems. I personally think it has more to do with the climate than anything else. Quote:
The plastic that the ARAH figures were made out of is very brittle and does crack within time depending on the conditions. For example if you live in a more humid climate they will definitely tend to break, much like the rubber bands do just from sitting. Another is a climate that changes from extreme heat to extreme cold..
The best suitable climate for them is on that does not drastically change and is semi cool to cold. Cold has a lesser reaction that the heat does to them. Think about it - plastic will expand a bit in warmer temperatures, right? And contract in cold? So if the plastic contracts around a metal rivet due to being stored in a cold environment (say, a basement, garage or shed in the winter), something's gotta give. Probably the best thing to do is keep 'em on display. I realize that's not always possible, but all this talk of plastic baggies and what not has got me worried. I'm glad someone brought up the wood/varnish issue too. Guess I'll be sticking with Ikea-type veneer shelves rather than getting real wood!

Yep, that should be lesson number one for any toy collector.
Get some good blinds or curtains - in fact, get both! Can't be too careful.
