I agree it would be AWESOME... but it will likely never happen due to the reasons stated above.

I don't think it would really work anyway because part of what makes custom figures cool is the ability to overload them with accessories and complicated paint aps. As a mass produced item though all kinds of things come in to play that we wouldn't generally consider, like how easily it can be machine replicated, how many colors and plastics are used for cost purposes, safety/choking hazards on small parts, etc. Not to say those are very complicated or difficult things to figure out on Hasbro's end, but unless they set really specific parameters like you can only use parts from X number of figures or X number of colors, etc. The figure that ends up winning would probably disappoint all of us because they would be basing it on a criteria we're not.

I'm sure there are probably some legal ramifications to what was proposed in the OP, but it would still be cool to see a contest like that.
As far as "fan favorites" for GI Joe, does the Hall of Heroes count toward that?

Having a contest would be very feasible, however unless they laid down some specific rules about part usage and such, mass-producing it could be near-impossible.
The benefit of customizing (and the reason so many of the figures end up so much "better" than Hasbro's) is that you have an effectively unlimited "budget" to make the figure and are not restricted as far as part and accessory selection and loadout. Wanna use a Crysis 2 Nanosuit torso with some Star Wars arms and Marvel Universe legs and a custom-cast head then load them out with BBI accessories and give them 12 different paint apps? Go right ahead. Your only limit is your imagination and your pocketbook. However, Hasbro can't do that. For Hasbro to make a "mass producible Custom contest" they'd basically have to say: "You must use nothing but Hasbro G.I. Joe parts to make your custom, and can have no more than "X" number of paint applications." Which might be feasible, but it'd cut down a lot on the options for the contest entrants, and you'd likely end up with some customs that look a whole lot like the product Hasbro gives us. Well that's what I meant. They WOULD have to lay down some hard rules if need be. But I would imagine some of the custom paint jobs for existing characters, wouldn't be too far different than what Hasbro might do anyway.
I'm just thinking there are a lot of traditional characters that haven't been modernized yet...OFFICIALLY. The paint apps wouldn't be that major of a roadblock IMO. Hell they did those paint apps once before...Why couldn't they do them again?

I think they could create some VERY specific rules for the contest - limit paint usage and what parts could be used, essentially what people call here a LBC - and it would work. But I also think such a contest kind is a bit of an attack on the designers at Hasbro, who have done some very nice figures lately.
I like the "Fan's Choice" idea a lot - particularly in a season where there is little marketing towards kids - but this has been hit and miss with SW and Marvel.

The custom idea is a great one but as highlighted above what makes a custom is the work and detailing that goes into it,that just wouldnt be achievable in a mass-produced figure.Fan's choice is a great idea, and one id love to see but you know full well there are people who still wouldn't be happy with the outcome. I dont envy anyone who works hands on with the joe line, just because some (or even most) days we never seem to be happy.....if its not the selection of characters, its the sculpting, paint or accessories...or the re-paints,or the now industry standard endz ov teh line self indulgent, instantly gratified,i want my sparkle-viper so they should make it type chit-chat....

actually, this is a good idea with more specific parameters, that being a new take on an existing character only using existing parts and accessories -- no sculpting. A Hasbro designer could sculpt an existing part to look like like a part for an old design so a customizer has no significant ability or vision doing such. but Hasbro hasn't always done a good job of simply part swapping to make new versions of old characters, and that is where many customizers have trumped Hasbro.
