I was just wondering how many of you out there were collecting the 25th/Modern Joes as an investment of sorts? I, personally, am not. But I know a lot of people get all worked up over card conditions, variations and having stuff AFA graded.
But if you look at the Star Wars line, for example: when these were being released in the the mid-90's, the interest in these figures was huge. I collected briefly, but only went after figures I had interest in, and very few of them remained on their cards. Looking at the value of those now, some aren't worth as much as retail, and very few are worth more than $12. Not a wise investment. The whole reason things appreciate in value is because they're rare. When there is so much interest in something, such as SW or Joe, there are a lot of fans who will collect them because it's a passion. But then there are others who go out and think that they're going to sit on something until it's worth a couple hundred bucks - who knows? It may happen. Only time will tell. But to me, it's just opportunism. And if all it means to yoou is that you think you might make a few quick dollars off of it, why not play the stock market? The reason the original SW line is able to fetch so much is that the supply for those figures were unable to keep up with the astronomically high demand for them. That, and they're a lot older. The original ARAH Joes have decent value, but compared to a line that was out only 5 years prior to them, it's not much. So, I guess what I'm asking is, is your interest in GI Joe more on the hobby side, or investment side? |

For me it is a hobby. I have a daughter who obviously is not in to Joes but I might have a son some day and I would like to pass them on to him. The problem with the Star Wars line was Hasbro release so many of them and saturated the market. You could go anywhere and everywhere and find them I think I saw them at gas stations too back in the day. I think (if it is their approach now) Hasbro has smartened up and has limited production. It keeps their cost down and actually makes collecting Joes fun.

I'm picky about card condition for my carded figures, but that's purely because of the appearance. If I wanted to invest my money, I'd put it into something other than toys.

If you like bad ideas then investing in GI Joe toys is the way to go.

I collect out of passion & could care less about value. I have started collecting my favorite characters mint on card. I thought I could resist but unfortunately I broke - they just look so cool in package with their art work.

Depends on what your idea of investment is. Investment for personal gratification in having these toys, yes it is a investment. Investment in terms of a future financial gain it can be, based on somethings are/will always be worth something financially to someone else.

Joes are a hobby to me. I am an 80's kid and loved to reminisce about my favorite toys back when. I collect them with friends and have fun looking and hunting them down. We get together at least once a week and have a blast driving around town to find them.
