Talk of Hasbro’s next big Star Wars vehicle for the Return of the Jedi 30th anniversary is rumored to be Jabba’s big Sail Barge. If you turn an image of that barge upside down (below) you'll see the basic shape of a ship's hull. Lucas admits kit-bashing WW2 plastic model ships to create vehicles for his movies. Hasbro themselves also uses SW molds to create new toys, too. Ewok Village = Robin Hood playset. Indiana Jones troop truck = Joe Con’s “Red Shadows” staff car. In accordance to this practice; can Jabba’s Barge = Joe’s new Flagg?
If Hasbro goes all-out in a scaled 6 ft. Sail Barge (seen later in my post #51) then Hasbro already has "laid the keel" for a real possibiltiy of a full-fledged Flagg. Knowing Hasbro lurks to see what fans want, what if they see this, continue its practice of rehashing toys, use Jabba’s barge; and make Joe a new Flagg? How can it be done creatively to make it acceptable to you? Last edited by Tuskegee Joe; 11-14-2010 at 06:58 PM.. |

Example idea: “SKIN + SKELETON” approach.
Hasbro should economically milk its molds to full extent. One way to do it (without compromising detail) is using a universal “skeleton.” Flagg owners know a skeleton within holds-up that gray ship. Jabba’s brown ship can also use a similar (universal) skeleton. The Flagg's skeleton has an outer-skin / siding; a long gray “rubber-strip” running from front (stern) to back (bow). So a long brown rubber-siding / skin skirting the sides of Jabba’s brown barge can be done, too. Later, another long gray rubber-siding / skin can make Joe a new Flagg. So each “skin” will have its own characteristics, details, and textures (e.g. panels, grooves, rivets, etc.). See details on carrier’s side (below). So when designing both Jabba’s brown barge & Joe’s gray carrier; smartly create a universal “skeleton.” Simply make different “skins” to skirt-around its sides to flesh-out 2 distinctly different ships; yet still use the same big skeleton (mold). This is in harmony with Hasbro’s “modular” approach to vehicles (e.g. modular missle-launchers interchangable between Joe vehicles). EDIT: this modular approach also gives Hasbro options using cheaper material like cardboard / gameboard material for these sidings / skins. In fact, the entire deck can be printed with one big slick, photo-realistic, computer graphic; covering the entire top-deck with visually-stunninng details. Furthermore, its plastic skeleton (mold) will already be paid for, thanks to fellow toy collecting Star Wars fans and the 30th anniversary of ROTJ (2013). Joe's golden 50th anniversary the following year (2014) or Joe's 3rd movie (2015) gives 2 opportunities for Hasbro pick and debut a brand-spanking new Flagg. Best part of it all = before the Flagg even debuts, its big skeleton is already built, made, & paid for. As for the smaller features and accessories; what do you boys & girls want to see? I doubt either will ever happen, but Jabba's Sail Barge has a slightly better chance. If they do make it, I doubt it will be to scale, and knowing SW collectors (which I also proudly am), they will bitch about it for years to come. I think all collectors need to realize the days of large ships, vehicles, and playsets are long gone.

i dunno, the recent ATAT is frickin huge, as is the MFalcon...certainly it won't be to scale, as it would have to be 4-5 feet long, but it may still wind up being huge. Better change for the SW big stuff than the Joe big stuff. Alot of SW heads will just buy things at retail rather than wait for clearance like alot of us joe fans.

Star Wars will sadly always have more fans than Gi Joe...thats why they could make huge vehicules for SW and not for GiJoe...Let's remember what happenned to the Roc Pit...from 100$ to 25$ in a matter of a few months...well it was a crappy vehicule IMO, aside from collectors, few parents would buy their kids a 200$ or more Flagg.

It would be nice for Hasbro to find away to milk a mold for all its worth. I mean look at the Pit (critism aside) it has one use. I mean if it had been a big sucess reissues down the line may have been possible, but as is I think its safe to say The Pit was not a raving sucess sales wise.
And I think anybody who wanted one managed to snag one (or more) for clearence pricing. Which nearly gaurentees this mold is DONE. I've often wondered this before, but Hasbro could use a secondary line, or at least a secondary company to regularly sell this stuff to. Sorta like how the Joe molds pop up in the Chap Mei line. Which is why I seriously hope those JP pics with Joe molding show up at some point in retail reusing those molds for the JP line could make some lost money back for Hasbro...plus Stargate seems to have solidly reestablished itself as a Sci-Fi show, maybe resurrecting the 3.75 line would be useful (maybe not I mean that property is lagging again). I don't know it just seems that Hasbro could make better use of a lot of molds. Clearly they recycled bits of the ROCC for Ironman, and they recycled molds for The Hulk, and they even recycled Star Wars for Joe once, and Joe for Col. Fury......so recycle works, why not gear the lines more for that thought. |

I could see them doing a sail barge that's as big as the BMF. Wasn't there some guy on here that is supposed to have some insider knowledge who is adamant that we will get the sail barge. |
