I wouldn't say there's little quantity. There's a ton of stuff out there.
The problem is there's a ton of competition and not as much space on the shelves. As a kid, the Joes took up a good 6-8 feet of shelf space (pegs and shelves). Now, lucky to get 3' because of all the other toys out there. There's no way they can have the same amount on the shelves. So they do the "waves", so new product is always on the shelves. Also, if they released all the figures at once, people would buy 'em up and then what would keep their interest over the course of the year? Seriously, without new product every couple of months, how many people here would lose interest? As a kid it was cool because could only afford one or two at a time, so it took all year to get all the figures and vehicles. Now, I could buy a ton at once. So what's to keep my interest the rest of the year? So between shelf space, and buying habits, that's why there are waves.

Because they aren't expecting this Renaissance of Joe to be a long term property. They're shoving as much out as they can, in what they consider to be "safe" quantities, and grabbing as much cash as they can before it stalls out.

WOW! you bring back memories of doing chores and saving my allowance to buy that one G.I. Joe on that Saturday trip to the mall with the parents! Begging them to just let me swoop in real quick into the "TOYBOX" or "KAY-BEE" to get the $2.39 figure I have been thinking about all week long at school! No wonder it took all year to complete that year of Joes! But you are right, now I can go in to any store any buy up all the product on one swipe of the credit card! My how times have changed!

In general society has changed over the years. We have become a "I want it now society". People lose interest after a couple of weeks if nothing new shows up. and whats even funnier is it hasn't been 2 years it just barely 1 1/2. I think the first stuff started showing up in june of 07.
Also I think part of the problem is the packing of the cases. take Star Wars for example each case has 2-3 of each character thus if a store orders 3 cases 6-9 satisfied are satisfied (throw random kid purchases in there too) order 3 cases of gijoe and you only have 3 collectors satisfied. I imagine the person who orders cases was use to the "star wars" system (I hear that they are moving to the 1 per for them too) so knowing that 3 cases were sufficient for the flow of his store thats all they ordered. So you needed a case to have a complete collection (they are slowly changing this, but I think its too much too late) Impatience too. We all have our favorite character that we want updated that would make much more sense than character XXX that they already made. and they should update vehicle so & so because it was the best. so we snatch everything up waiting for our favorite. I honestly think at times hasbro has no clue how to make cases of figures. They have been doing it for years but still screw it up. We can assume most collectors and children "want" every figure( I don't think I would have said no to any as a kid even if it wasn't my fav. Then come the army builders who want 1 of the single personality and XX of the army builders. what does Hasbro do for the first what 6 waves? releases 1 of each character per case. Why cant they get a clue that army builders sell more than individuals (storm troopers, cobra soldier) its all the same. If you are making a case have 1 of singles and 2-3 of the soldiers I gaurantee they will sell. |

3 new figures a month would give us 36 new figs a year and not hurt any ones pocketbook. As long as there were 3 new figs per month they could stretch these sales out over the course of a few years and still keep the interest up.
Mattel is trying it with the new MOTU online only figures. 2 New figs a month at $20 a pop. Price is harsh but the release idea is good. |

There's no media for this 25th! Where's the 25th toy commercials during the carttons hours!? Is there even a Joe cartoon? That's what I thought!
Until then....until then. |

Agreed, Media support is BS. Hasbro should pay more attention to those that support the product without media than rely on those who "jump on the band wagon" when a movei comes out. |

How about have Hasbro actually make more figures in terms of number? That would be cool. Most of the people who collect these things are the ones (like me) who have been collecting since 1982 and others who collect most/all things G.I. Joe. This line is not aimed at kids. There's no point in debating it. If it was aimed at kids, then it would rival the production output of Ben 10 and Pokemon, I'm sure. There are no ads on television to push this product, so that's one piece of evidence that proves kids are not the target audience, and they don't even have a cartoon out there (I highly doubt there will be one until after the movie in 2009) to push it, either. I see here at the top of my screen that there's a comment about this, so I know I'm not nuts for thinking this. Adults and possibly younger people collect these things. It is a collectors' series of toys that will probably be on Ebay in ten years selling in mint condition because none of these days will have ever seen "combat" in the hands of a child. And what's with all the Snake-eyes figures? I am so sick of my favorite character that Scarlett (formerly #2) is now my favorite. For a toy line aimed at us collectors, don't you think they give us what we really want -- variety? How many Dukes and Cobra Commanders do we need? I could have used uniform variants back when I actually played with them, but now is a little too late. The USS Flagg is still mothballed in the other room. Its days of making this formers kid's plastic war campaigns an afternoon reality are over. Today, I don't need four Duke figures, especially repaints. Repaints and variants should be left for mail-ins. Most of us will never get a clear Wraith thanks to scalpers. Luckily, I got one for 20 bucks at my local comic shop, but I'd like one to take out of the pack and put on display. So, where am I going here? Make one of each figure and make more of them. They can't really be making a ton of them. I live in the 4th largest city and we have Walmarts and Targets out the wahzoo, and they are all out of these figures (because of either Ebay scalpers or folks like me who want these things). Hasbro needs to bump up the production especially since there's this little movie coming out next year about one of their premier toy lines from the 1980s. And as far as to how manyfigures they should do a year? Well, remember that the latest trend in toys is to come out with 6 to 8 figure lots, and not make enough to go around. I'm just hoping that the variety of figures and number of them is boosted between now and the movie. When the flick comes out, I hope both the movie and the figures are top notch, because Mattel's Speed Racer figures were the of the worst quality I've ever seen from a major toy manufacturer. This soapbox is closed.

this isn't about Hasbro's strategy. retail strategy has changed, which Hasbro has to appeal to. years ago, retail stores were okay with keeping the same products on the shelf throughout the year. nowadays, retailers want new products throughout the year to keep product moving and new product coming in to stimulate sales. you have to always buy now just in case that product goes away when the new product comes out in a few months.
