Honestly, though, even though that character was deep, deep into the WGAF territory of Joedom for me, I'd like it if they'd make a modern Headman. However, I also know it'd not only be short-packed, but overly gobbled up by customizers who want the business suited body. A flood... a flood, I say... of Speech Giving CC's, Tomax & Xamots... and on and on... |

Yeah there's a few characters that we as fans have been drooling to get our hands on.
I think over time we might see them happen one way or the other. I mean come on just a few short years ago we we're all clamouring for Oktober Guard figures and now we have them. Also we've been drooling for figures like Ninja Ku, Mortal, Wraith, and Glenda all of which we have in some form now. So I think (or I hope at least) between Hasbro tossing us the occassional bone and with Convention sets maybe one day well see a Billy figure, or Zanya, or Heartwrencher one day. |

What some fans think of as a gloriously created universe of characters and stories is the result of marketing and happenstance. The marketing aspect is why comic characters were mostly ignored. Hasbro had its own people developing new characters who they thought would sell, based on their criteria. If a propose character was approved by the Hasbro suits, then Hama would create a file card for them and send comments to Hasbro (he talked them out of making Mindbender a torturer, fearing more controversy, like what happened with Zartan's schizophrenic profile). For the comic, Hama made new characters to tell certain stories (Baroness was invented so Cobra Commander had someone to talk to). Fans lucked out and she made into the other media (cartoon and toys), she was the major exception during ARAH's vintage run. |

You also have to remember that GI Joe was created to sell the vehicles, not the figures. The figures were to pilot the vehicles and to man the guns (why virtually every Hasbro toy can be loaded to bear with figures). So, if a figure was very secondary - like a Soft Master - who would be too big to fit in a vehicle and really didn't fit in on a "team", it didn't make sense market wise to make him. As a kid in the 80s, I was struggling just to afford the "cool" figures (along with most of my friends). Vehicles were major purchases. Kids always will want action packed figures and not a fat guy that didn't do too much but just was part of the story.

At the last convention, they showed pictures of figures coming next year and one "looked" like Dr. Venom, but there wasn't a label underneath the figure that confirmed it. People that came back from the fair said that it was Venom, so maybe it will be. I believe he was to be an O-ring figure, though - can't remember. It was a convention exclusive though.
