This is my first toy review ever, so bare with me.
This a review of the Avatar Scorpion Gunship compared with the GI Joe DragonHawk for those of you who want to add a helicopter gunship to their GI Joe team. Price: The GI Joe DragonHawk retails for $24.99 at Toy R Us and the Avatrar Scorpion is selling for $26.99 on Amazon.com. Paint Application: Well, neither vehicle sports much in the way of paint apps. The DragonHawk has no paint apps, but comes with lots of decals which plays up on long time collector's nostalgia. The Scorpion has a few paint apps on the missiles, tail fins, and forward wing, but doesn't come with any decals. The few paint apps are simple numbering and lettering, nothing fancy. Design, Material, and Manufacturing: Both vehicles feel like they are cut from the same cloth. The material feels like the same vinyl plastic is used. The sculpted details are strikingly similar, and the canopies on each vehicle use a similar angular design. If it wasn't for the fact that the DragonHawk is made by Hasbro and the Scorpion is made by Mattel I would have guessed the design team worked on both vehicles. The DragonHawk sports one forward mounted turret and two hidden, pop-out missile pods. The missile pods are a simple yet clever design. With the pods retracted the DragonHawk is sleek, quick looking chopper. Extended, the pods prove the DragonHawk can really dole out some damage. Each pod can fire two spring loaded missiles. This is where the Scorpion starts to outshine the DragonHawk. The Scorpion has two forward mounted turrets, eight guided missiles (two of which are spring loaded), and 190 unguided missles in ten launch tubes. As far as gunships go the Scorpion is armed to the teeth and ready to kill. Opinions: The Scorpion is longer, wider and taller than the DragonHawk. The Scorpion really looks like it could go in and level an entire Cobra compound and have ammunition to spare. Meanwhile the DragonHawk looks like it is designed to get in, deliver its limited missile load out and escape quickly. Obviously the DragonHawk is designed for GI Joes. Wild bill is sitting the cockpit right now, but I'm sure just about any Joe could fit inside (excluding certain crotch issues). The Scorpion is designed for James Cameron's Avatar movie tie-in toys. The Avatar toys are much shorter and much more slender than GI Joes. As it is Lady Jaye fits comfortably inside the cockpit, and I'm sure other female characters will fit in just as well. The male characters? Not so easy. I managed to get Trip Wire into the cockpit. It took some work getting the legs at the right angle and then getting the shoulders inside. He fits, but it is snug. Fortunately Trip Wire makes a better looking pilot than a landmine expert. Larger, more muscular Joes probably won't fit without some custom work done on the cockpit. I like both vehicles, but it seems like the Scorpion (and Mattel) out "GI Joed" the GI Joes. The Scorpion really fills that niche left open in the GI Joe line up for a heavy gunship. If you don't mind having a female pilot then the Scorpion is willing and waiting. If you want Wild Bill or another male Joe to fly then you might need to do a little work to get him in there comfortably. Or get him in there once and never take him out, because getting situated is a pain. Last edited by Bujo; 06-16-2010 at 08:57 PM.. |

I was just looking at this today with my father-in-law. Told him I thought it would be the perfect Joe vehicle. May have to snatch it up and put some of my extra Joe decals on it!
Thanks for the review! |

Thanks for the thoughts on the Avatar vehicle. I have seen this in stores and realized by the size of the box that it probably won't fit G.I. Joe figures too well... Maybe I'll pick one up on clearance.

I am impressed by ho much larger it appears than the dragonhawk. I believe that if the dragonhawk had that same bulk there would have been far less disappointment from fans.
It does need a bit of color/ decoration but that is easlily remedied I do think the landing skids look pretty piddly! |

I may just have to pick this up if a Joe can fit inside it.

Thanks for the review! I think that even if the movie does well, the Avatar toys will still sit on the shelves like the Star Trek figures. That just means more clearance items for Joe collectors.

Someone should sit it up beside the Sigma 6 Dragonhawk. The thing is clearly (( CLEARLY)) a rip off of that vehicle. Which is much cooler. Sadly the seats are set for a 2.5 fig instead of 3.75, but some out there have converted them.

I just wish the Avatar ship was big enough to carry troops. Then I would be in love with it. As is I'm kinda on the fence. Might pick one up on sale.
