I'm sure it's been discussed here and I'm sorry if I missed those threads but I'm wondering why the original hasbro toys have never been reissued? I remember when I was in highschool 1997ish I saw some 3 and 3/4 packs at target that looked rather similar to the toys from the 80s. Is there a legal issue?

They've actually done re-issues or re-paints since 1983 with the O-Ring figures. They've pretty much said they won't be doing any more of them with the exception of the "Then & Now" sets from Target.

The newer ones have so much better detail, IMO. I like them better, although I grew up in the 80's and had quite a few of the O-ring figs.

I prefer the current molds as they look a lot better and are better proportioned. The only complaint I've had is why Hasbro didn't return the color-change plastic for 20th and Heroes Zartan. And while I though the mini swamp skier was cute, they missed an incredible opportunity for some deluxe version with one he could actually ride. I've never understood why they haven't used the color-change gimmick again. I have 2 or 3 originals that still change color and are just as sturdy as ever. So it can't be a materials issue.
I'm doubting too that it could be a cost issue as lots of things at the dollar stores and truck stops change color. |

If you are looking for the classic o-ring styled figures, just hunt down the old TRU 6 packs.
They had a Night Force, Tiger Force, Desert Squad, Anti-Venom Squad, Winter Squad, Green Shirts, and another set of Joes with heavy weapons or whatever. They came out just as I started collecting Joes, and are perfect to start building a collection of o-ring Joes in the classic style. There's a few Cobra sets as well that are out. There was also a Stars and Stripes Forever set, which featured the original Joes, but were sort of just updates for the most part. |

I wonder if the new 25th plastic just doesn't have the capability for color transformation. Perhaps they could just make a Zartan in "chameleon" mode.

The first 25th Zartan does change color. The figures sometimes have green or grey faces which is likely why Hasbro decided not to do it for other Zartan releases. There may be differences in how well the different plastics change, and they probably wanted to make sure the figures were all of the same material.

I am curious to see what Hasbro will do for future then and now releases. I have yet to pick up the Snowjob set - I am snowjobbed out, but will likely get it when price drops - I have yet to see one move at my local Target (well, it moves from one shelf to another, but not out of the store from what I can see). If I remember correct, they said future then/now sets will be figures rather than vehicles. I am all over any of the OG13 done that way.
