Hear me out here - this isn't an anti-RoC thread. I actually quite like the design of a lot of the movie stuff.
What I'm talking about are the oft-maligned spring-loaded rocket launchers in the figures or vehicles, or multiple sound effects in something like the Night Raven. Here in Canada, the Night Raven just sit on the shelves, and I don't think it has anything to do with the movie/popularity or how it looks. You can pine all day for the original '86 version, but the design of this plane is still pretty sweet looking. Personally, I think it's the price - $50 CDN plus tax for this thing, and figures are no less than $10 unless you're lucky enough to find a sale. I know they're a bit cheaper in the US but not significantly so, given how much complaining goes on about them. We always hear about Hasbro trying to cut costs, so do you think that maybe in this economy they should have looked at ways to cut down prices and sell them at a lower price point? I'm sure that a cool looking plain without the bells and whistles would still appeal to children (heck, they buy the True Heroes ones, don't they?), and be more attractive to parents at say, $35 rather than $50. Ditto for the figures - did they ALL have to have spring-loaded launchers? Certainly that helped drive up the price somewhat. I admit I don't have any actual figures to back up these ideas, but it seems logical that it would cost less to produce a figure with less accessories. Thoughts?

I think the movie night raven looks pretty cool, but the price has kept me from buying one.

The thing that stopped me from buying one is that WAY before these were out in stores, a Mod here bought one for like $100 from China. Less than a week later, he had it up for sale asking just what he paid for it. I PMed him and asked if it was really that bad and he said yes. That sealed it for me.

Fair point. Undoubtedly the price points are having an effect on sales.
But I tend to believe that Hasbro did it's research, like any million dollar company would do prior to releasing a product, and that research showed what the demographic they were aiming for would be looking for in a toy, and they went with that and got stuck in the price points based on production/design costs. I mean, I can't imagine/see a company of Hasbro's size just going "you know, let's throw some spring loaded launchers on these babies" without going and first doing some research to see how well they could possibly sell. Research is research, there's no way to tell how things would do once they hit the market, all research can tell you is that people would be interested in certain things. So I think they're more a victim of the economy taking a downturn more then releasing an unwanted product.

I can't necessarily bash the spring-loaded weapons, seeing as how I just used a few on a custom vehicle, but I agree that they didn't have to come with EVERY figure, and that would probably have cut down on the cost somewhat. I dig that figures are $5 at WM. I can afford that and it seems like a fair price. I don't know what the cost is, but I can't help but think they are still making a little cash off of them. As far as the night raven, I probably shouldn't speak to that, because I've seen them on sale for $25 and I still won't buy one because I have no interest in it and it doesn't go with my collection. I can't help but think that $25 is affordable to those who are interested in it, and again, I wonder what the cost is and how much retailers are losing (if any) at that price. I'd bet they're losing something at that price, but they are losing more if they are just sitting on the shelves.

Okay, but had it been $25-30, with no electronics/shooting features (i.e. no hand grip), but it had rolling wheels, would you have given it a shot? I'd be pretty angry with myself if I had paid $100 for it, too...

For the last time (probably not) the 8 dollar price point HAS NOTHING to do with the figures coming with the missile launchers. 8 dollar (in the states) is what the retailers/hasbro have worked out for the 3 3/4" action figures (Star Wars, Marvel Universe, Wolverine, and G.I. Joe). The 5 dollar price point is to get rid of the extra inventory. After the holidays the prices will probably go back up.
Hopefully they'll go to a happy medium between 5 and 8, so the figures still sell at the extra brisk pace and the retailers still make enough money that they want to keep carrying the line.

I wondered about that too. With the price of oil pushing up plastic... why would you insert this big huge chunk of it. Plus the money spent on designing the different sculpts for the weapons... It would have been cool if they just did a smaller nanomite launcher along the lines of the CW clone missle launcher or gattling gun.
The other thing about the ROC toys are their cool factor. I've purchased some of the old ARAH vehicle instead of buying the new stuff. A mole pod, really, kids are going to play tunneling... Just not enough cool looking stuff. |

I'm not necessarily saying that's WHY the prices were raised, just that it seems logical that if they WERE to lower them, getting rid of all that extra plastic seems like one way to contribute to that end. I mean, they've cheapened out on us before by not including tiny accessories like a pistol or knife with a driver figure, so certainly removing a much larger and complicated accessory would also cut costs.
