Well I thought it was a good idea at the Time, I've wanted a Vintage Night Raven for as long as I can remember.
I bought one that was missing just about everything off ebay for $19 total. I've spent on the jet plus parts to get it complete about $86 dollars total. And now may end up spending maybe $20 or more to get a parts lot that has just about everything I need to outfit an entire night raven plus I just bought almost all the parts that lot has on ebay and All I need out of that lot really is just the Cockpit and Tail Fins. I'm starting to think I did buy a money pit since probably for the price of what I've spent on parts I probably should have bought a full complete one. My other Restoration projects in recent years my Whale, X-19,and recently a 25th Anniversary Tiger Rat have all been pretty cheap compared to this one. And if I do get that parts lot I'm bidding on I'll probably sell all the parts I just bought and I know I won't get back what I spent on them. The Auction I won't let me save the pic so I can't really show the night raven jet till I actually get it. Last edited by TyjosAzari; 11-01-2009 at 08:06 PM.. |

If you enjoy the art of the chase and piecing it together yourself, then I would say no. If you just wanted a complete one for the sake of having it, it may have been cheaper to buy it complete. It is like car collectors buying old cars to restore. They see the joy in doing it yourself.

I love to restore old toys, it's just my hobby I do enjoy it just I hate looking at how much I spend on parts that's the bad thing.
I find allot of stuff at Thrift Shops every now and then and just know that some things I can search up parts and get em fully restored. That makes it all worth while when you see something you spent little or nothing on fully restored sitting on your shelf... I got my Killer Whale in a trade with a friend of mine and it didn't take much to fully restore it, the X-19 I got from a friend who didn't want it since it was taking up space and had just been in poor shape from years of neglect, now it's a prime piece in my Joe Collection... Other restoration project I still need to complete is the Thunderclap cannon, I got extra parts for that I need to get rid of. I guess now these days I'm more aware of how much I spend on parts just takes the joy out of restoring toys I guess. |

At $86 for a complete Raven, you didn't really spend a whole lot more than you would have if you bought one complete. And if its a hobby of yours you enjoy, then the extra 10-15 dollars you spent isn't that big of a deal. I guess the main thing is, do you feel good about it or are you feeling bent over? Thats all that really matters in the end.

Sounds Money Pit'ish to me, but then I don't do restoration/customizing type stuff, I'da just bought a decent condition one and be done with it, so my opinion may not carry as much weight.

I would say no it's not a money pit. You have paid what it is worth on the lower end, so you've actually gotten a good deal.
I've seen near perfect ones sell loose for as high as $125 recently!

Yeah and I'll end up with extra parts if I get that lot so I guess that means I can turn around and sell the parts I don't need and maybe get some of that $$$$$ back.

I like to restore toys also.Mostly G.I.Joe.
Right now I'm restoring a Cobra Stinger that I got at a flea market. It's missing just about everything. The body and wheels are in good shape. I usually take a while to finish completing a project because I tend not to just buy the first part I see on ebay with a sometimes outrageous price tag plus shipping attached to it. You have to have patience and look for bargins. I just bought the back bumper to the Stinger on ebay for $1.19(I saw the same piece for triple the price) plus $3 sh/h(the shipping is the crappiest part of restoration projects). |
