So, I'm looking for the new Star Wars figure, Shae Vizla, the Mandalorian gal. My wife can't find her at retail (I'm overseas at the moment and can't do my own hunting) but she is fairly well available at places like Amazon and eBay. But it's more than I want to pay at the moment, since I plan on opening the figure to play with.
The question that came into my head this morning as I was e-hunting, was how in THE hell did I get all of the action figures I had as a kid? I lived in BFE, Colorado. It was a one horse town and they shot that horse long before I moved there...yet...I was able to find EVERY GI Joe figure I wanted. I didn't have every GI Joe figure as a kid, but I had the opportunity. I DID have every Star Wars figure. Never had a problem finding figures, even the popular ones. I didn't have BBTS, Amazon, Ebay, the internet. I didn't have buddies all over the country, hell, all over the world, hooking me up. But I was able to get every figure. Even in BFE, Colorado. Now if you went into any of those places I got figures at and asked for them, they'd look at you like you had a dick growing out of your forehead. How did that change? |

They were probably much more plentiful and cheaper when most of us were kids, with a few exceptions. With the Joes, they dropped all the cartoons and adverts. With SW, they dropped most of the adverts but drastically increased the stock in stores. And, with the net as the new standard for buisiness, the brick and mortor stores have stopped carrying, at least when it comes to Joes.

Gotta remember they sold the sames figure for a couple years at a time. None of this limited edition waves 1-12 bullshit. It was series and sold all year, numerous restocks!!!

I've often wondered the same thing. You wanted a SS or FF or SE? You walked into a store and there they were. Like the others said, these figs were usually around for a couple of years and distribution never seemed to be a problem. And people were probably less likely to army build, and the Internet wasn't around so people probably weren't picking up figures to resell. Don't know how prevalent customizing was back in the day, but perhaps people weren't doing much of that either.

Also, retail stores dont want "leftovers" seems they would rather "sell-out" of the toys , then have some leftovers.
But, the best answer is : longer distribution time. And more restocks. Some of the me waves only got 1 case in some stores. So if you missed it, that was all. |

It's called crappy distrobution and Hasbro's had a bad case of it for well over 5 or 6 years.

It changed because I hadn't come into town yet with my gluttonous behemoth of an appetite for troop builders. LOL!

The internet didn't exist for consumers, so stores stocked the U KNOW WHAT out of everything and made it last.
For a long time, stores would either clearance stuff or choose to return it to the manufacturer for credit, so supply and demand had a solid check valve. For a long time you could find whatever you wanted out there (there were no limited production runs to create exclusivity for collectors either), but when the clock ran out you wouldn't necessarily see them again. |

As toy production went, you tended to get two years out of a vehicle or fig, and waves were staggered for some old and new at the same time...the ADHD of collectors markets hadn't kicked in for multiple waves per year with new figures. It made a huge difference in availability...the cost was that you'd never see the kind of character options we have today.

You kind of answered your own question. Without the internet it's not as easy or convenient to flip them to make a buck, so you have fewer people buying them ALL simply to sell them. Plus, since you mention you lived in a small town I'm sure you were probably 1 of a few people that bought them. Now due to the internet a lot more people are exposed to collecting, where you can find things, when they are hitting the pegs, and what stuff can be sold for so you have more people hunting out there.
