I started off getting these guys because they look cool and I thought they might be worth a little something 25 years from now. I've been posting on yojoe, asking for thoughts on what these guys will be worth 25 years from now and by the sound of it most people there think they won't be worth squat. I've got a pretty decent 82-89 collection, not much MOC stuff though so I thought it would be cool to get these 25th figures MOC. Now I'm feeling like I should get rid of them and go back to 82-89. I've already got something like 150 MOC singles, one each of the battle packs, and like 2 or 3 of all the comic packs up to date.
I'm at a crossroads and would appreciate any advice. Should I continue to obtain the 25th line or dump it and go back to 82-89 only? I like them both. I like the 25th line because it's cool to see them MOC. I like the 82-89 stuff because they most remind me of being a kid. Why do you collect 25th Joes? |

I collect solely for nostalgia. If one day I need to sell and these figures are worth what I paid for them, I'll be happy, if they're worth more, all the better. If they are worth less than that, oh well that's just how the market goes.
Either way though, I collect for me alone not for the possibility of future re-sale. |

I totally understand the fact that you collect figures as a hobby as well as an investment, but don't get too crazy about it. I loved toys as a kid and I started collecting them again in 1995 when the Star Wars POTF2 line was released. While growing up my parents didn't have alot of money, so I didn't have many toys. I used to go over to a friend's house to play because he had EVERY Star Wars and Transformers item that was released back in the 70's and 80's. He wasn't into G.I. joe though, so that's what I tried to collect the most when I had the money. Most of my G.I. Joe collection was stolen, so I've been trying to replace them over the years.
When the Star Wars POTF2 line was released in 1995 I was buying 2 of EVERY figure that they released. One to open, and one to keep sealed, you know because they could be "worth" some money some day. Well 13 years later that was a horrible "investment" because those figures are pretty much worthless right now. I would be lucky if I got back what I paid for them. These figures were way over produced like 1987 & 1988 Topps baseball cards. As for my collecting now, and for this 25th Anniversary line, I only buy the figures I like. I open most of them for display. If there is a figure I really like I might buy 2 to keep one sealed. I no longer feel the need to buy EVERY figure that they release. I mainly collect G.I. Joe, Star Wars and Transformers now, with the occasional super hero figure thrown in. I don't suggest you buy these figures as an investment because you might be sorry later on down the line. Buy coins from the mint instead. If you want to make money with these figures now is the time. It's all about supply and demand. Old figures were never made with collectors in mind. They were toys for kids. Now they make figures with kids and adults in mind, so they produce more, and people are trying to save them MOC. The reason why original MOC figures are worth so much is because not many people saved them that way with the idea of them being "worth" something down the line. Now everybody saves them for that purpose. If you want to make some money with toys buy a figure that just comes out and try to be one of the first people to sell it on ebay, because once they are out in abundance the prices will fall. |

I collect them as they remind me of having a good time with my friends as a kid. I had tons of fun with the old Joes. I had mostly 82-85 figures, not much newer than those.
I'm in Canada so getting the 25th figures isn't that easy. I may go back to getting the old ones to replace the ones I damaged as a kid. I'm also not buying as an investment, otherwise I would of bought Bonds or RRSP's |

I collect for nostalgia. I do buy two of every figure. Not so much that they will be worth something, but because the carded figure itself is worthy of display. (I just don't have a place to display at the moment though). And I agree with Scoop - these are produced as collectibles rather than simply as toys. And 20 years down the road, there will be tons more people who saved MOC which will reduce the value.
I feel bad now that when I was a kid, I opened all the Star Wars figures (from 1978) that my mother hid away.... Now they would be worth something! |

Buying toys for the purposes of investment might not be the most lucrative way to make money, in my opinion. Part of the reason that unopened toys up through the early-mid 1980s are worth so much is that very, very few people actually thought to keep those toys in that condition. Like comic books, a lot of people nowadays collect toys in pristine condition, and so the high supply means that they won't ever be worth as much as, say, a 1984 Storm Shadow.
Though you get low supply figures like the Gold PDD that might be worth a bit, I don't think it's price is going to go up so far in the future. In fact, it's price will likely go down as Joe popularity inevitably wanes. If you want to make money through investment, consider stocks or foreign currencies. I don't think you are going to be making much of a profit on these Joes. If you collect them, do it because you like them (though I agree with Scoop in that you can make very minor profits by selling some of that stuff now. . .I just don't think it would be worth the trouble). |

To open, play with, display, connect with nostalgia, etc. When I feel like making an investment I put money in a money market account, not into toys.
I mean, the reason stuff from 82 is worth crazy money carded is because there is relatively very little of it left carded. Everybody and their brother keeps stuff carded now, and that's fine if that's how you want to display it. But that means there's unlikely to be a scarcity of MOC stuff 25 years from now.

I do it for nostalgia as well. I remember a friend who also had (it seemed) EVERY Joe/Cobra and all the vehicles and playsets. So I started getting them when I could, and there were one's (namely 82-86) I just couldn't get anymore in '87 so I always hated the fact that I'd missed some.
That being said, now I get at least one of every figure (including variants), I display around 75% while still leaving some on the card, because the artwork is great (my gf even comments often on how cool the artwork is). I don't see myself making money on these 20 years done the road, although I could sell my silver and gold PDD, yellow stalker, shark tat shipwreck, and black timber SE and easily recoup all my spending so far. But I won't |
