whenever a scalper is around another scalper, they sense each other. Then they will go to the parking lot and have a sword fight. The winner gets the prize. The loser gets his head chopped off. In the end, there can be only one (per case). Here's a pic of one i caught at wal-mart:

So I guess that means Target, Publix, my Chevy dealer's parts department, the independent insurance agent I deal with, Wal Mart (they tend to sell closer to the margin but still sell cheap items they've bought for a profit), Game Stop, Movie Stop, Applebee's, Red Lobster, Food Lion, Winn Dixie, Domino's Pizza, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Burger King, Dillards, Sears, Best Buy, Comp USA, Sports Authority, Play it Again Sports, Used car dealers, new car dealers, etc etc etc are all scalpers since they all buy items that they turn around and sell at a considerable markup.
Sorry man, I agree with what you're saying that folks should stop buying from folks on EBay but I think your definition of scalper is a little off because buying low and selling for a profit is the basis of our capitalist system. Now, if you don't believe in capitalism that's one thing but, if you do, then you have to acknowledge that the guy who buys all the Joe toys at Target is doing the same thing that stores or restaurants around the country do on a daily basis. The only difference is, one hawks his wears on EBay and the other puts them on a shelf with a price tag. I think the subtly is the scalper buys something at retail prices+tax and proceeds to try and sell it above normal MSRP. The scalper is competing with the general public who is in the market to buy toys. In contrast, the retail businesses has a license to conduct a retail business and a tax I.D. number that allows them to buy wholesale directly from Hasbro or perhaps some wholesale distributor. The business then proceeds to mark up the price maybe to MSRP or whatever price they choose. There is a difference between scalpers and regular businesses, but there is no difference in that both are trying to make a profit. Perhaps, the definition should be more specific to say that scalpers buy something at retail stores yadda yadda yadda... Last edited by sharky; 08-27-2009 at 01:57 PM.. |

I bought the "start your own ebay store" book. I read the toy section of the book and the broad was saying to go out usally Saturday mornings when they bring out all the new action figures and have first crack at them. So I'm guess these dirt bags are at the stores bright and early in the mornings while were at work making an honest pay check. Why don't these bastards buy their stuff whole sale?

Here is the different between scalpers and retailers. Retailers pay taxes for every dollar that they make, and scalpers normally don't.
Making profit is capitalism, but beeing a good citizen is what differentiated between scalpers and retailers. |

My wife and I actually tried that with a friend that had a shop back in 1999 when Episode 1 hit. We all went in together and purchased a contract with Hasbro, because we wanted to do the legit capitalistic thing, and got severely screwed over by Hasbro. Since we were considered a Mom & Pop shop we were charged more per case than your mass retailer. In turn, in order to just BREAK EVEN we had to charge more per figure than the mass-market retailer. This was something we were aware of pre-contract, so that was not necessarily a problem. Having product knowledge and a general feel for the market we knew what we needed and when we needed it in order to make the contract work.
The problem came in when they began delaying our shipments (by up to 2 months), sending us product we did not order, and changing our figure assortments after the order with promises that the correct cases were on their way. Then they refused to send us more unless we extended our contract, and had to fight just to get what we paid for after we cancelled the contract. We lost a $#!t-load of money, and a lot of respect that I had for Hasbro. I'm not defending scalpers at all, but it is not that easy to get a contract with Hasbro and make it work in a way that's not completely one-sided in Hasbro's favor. |

You know a scalper has been somewhere when you don't find what you want and you need some imagined nemesis to blame. Blaming children and other collectors just wouldn't go over as well on the message boards.
