Or how about; scalpers compete with their customer base whereas retail businesses don't?
Not sure about you guys but I've never had to go to the Hasbro store and compete with Wal-Mart to find that kick-ass version of General Hawk I really wanted. |

My definition of a scalper is anyone who buys a product at retail then turns around and marks it up for resale. I have bought stuff for people on here, and I always sell it for what I paid for it.
The only scalper I have ever seen is when my Wally put out the Clone Wars toys out and a heavy set guy in his late 50s had cleared the pegs and had all of them in his cart. Every last SW action figure. I walked by when the stocker had just finished putting them on the pegs, walked down to electronics, and on my way back this guy had struck. He was making a mad dash to the checkouts.

Scalpers are nothing more than business men.......
>>>>>>> LOL..that's the funniest thing i've read today ,seriously they are just "businessmen" more like low-life crooks if you ask me ,i don't mind paying a bit more for something on the re-sell market ,but when they jack up the price three or four times the amount ,that's just pure greed and ruins collecting . What scares scalpers the most is one day their so-called "valuable" merchandise will be worth nothing ,and they will be stuck with it because they priced them selves out of market when they had the chance to sell it at a reasonable price ,and that they will have to get a "real job" that part really scares the shit out of them . |

Guys like the BBTS guys (and countless others) run a business that often relies upon resale of store exclusives. They run a respectable, profitable, legal business that qualifies in every respect as a "real job", and quite frankly enhances collecting, as they often have items that are otherwise unavailable. What's the difference between them and a regular collector, who sells extras of what he comes across at a profit to help him pay for the rest of his collecting? He jacks up the price on a rare figure he comes across, and sells it to another collector. That not only enables that other collector to obtain a hard-to-find item without the hassle of looking for it, it allows the finder to purchase more toys for his collection. I often pay more for a figure from a reseller simply because I don't have the time to be out hunting all the time. I'm happy to pay more to avoid that at times. Othertimes, I'd rather hunt. There are collectors who prefer one or the other. Everybody wins. Oh, except for those with the mentality that they're somehow entitled to walk into a retail store and find a hard-to-find item without having to look hard for it at the lowest cost possible. If it were that easy, there wouldn't be any toy hunts, hard to find items, gems of collections, chase variants, etc, which to me is part of the fun of this hobby.

I really don't like that joker from the comic and collectible store - the only reason he buys the rarer $hit up at discount retail is so he can double the price and sell it at his bull$hit strip mall shop.
Although I see the CS Snake Eyes figs that he cleaned out of WalMart at $5.34 a throw and had on his hooks at $13.83 a throw were marked down to $7.49 a throw this weekend. There's a downside to this vein of 'scalping', in that respect, I guess - it's only a successful scalp if the scalper sells at the inflated price. I mean, he's been carrying that inventory for what - going on five months, now? At what point is he losing money after he loads his WalCart up with rare collectibles, drives back to the shop, puts those retarded orange price tags on each item, hangs them on the pegs, and then sits there ten hours a day for weeks on end drinking Mountain Dews with the lights on and the cable internet NOT tuned into internet porn while the same fifteen yayhoos visit the store and don't buy? Oh, yeah - Mod Derek - way to stick up for sponsors by name.

I am a mod. I get paid nothing, and my volunteer efforts as a mod go only as far as enforcing rules in this site. My only compensation is to see a site that I enjoy being a part of get better. In other words, I have zero motivation to state things from any particular point of view other than my own. I posted what I posted as a regular member of the forum- we mods are regular guys like you, and have regular opinions, like you. Look back at other scalper-rant threads, I made similar arguments way before I was given the mod title. People need to get over the idea that they're entitled, and that anyone who buys what they want before they do -whether it's to resell or keep or trade or whatever- is a jerk, or a hoarder, or scalper, or whatever other derogatory label they want to put on it. We're in a hobby that involves collectables, which by nature can often be hard to obtain. If you can't handle the game, get out. It's that simple. And before anyone freaks out, I 'm not promoting being a so-called scalper. I'm simply pointing out that ranting about them is often misdirected, not ever constructive, and generally ends up being more of a witch hunt than anything. The best course of action is to find a great site, like this one, with good people, and engage in fair trade.

Well the only solution I see to verifying if someone is a scalper or not is burning them at the stake. Really it's the only way to be sure.
