See I recall playing with Transformers, Voltron, TMNT, M.A.S.K., and a slew of other things, but I also recall the Christmas my Dad bought us a Nitnedo in 1985. The full package with system, two controllers, zapper, and that ROB robot thing with Duck Hunt and Gyromite. Eventually we also got Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda... Me and my older brother played the system a lot, but we still played with action figures.
Of course, over time my bro and me got more into gaming with Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo... The toy collecting I think kinda stopped. Though a friend brought me back in with Transformers Beast Wars toys in the early 90s. So I still was into video games, but back into action figures somewhat. PSX, PS2, XBOX, GameCube.... However, I notice in more recent years, my interest in gaming has dwindled. I don't buy games as much as I used, only a rare few I do now... Like the last game I bought when it first came out was Fallout 3. Otherwise, I've waited til a number of games were dirt cheap. I think it's because it's like every five years they're basically trying to get you to buy the next big system and forget the old one as well as focus more online for gaming then single player. I've always ben a gamer that likes to play alone, so that turns me off, but also when a game system upon release is $700... If I wanted to deal with all that, that's what PCs are for. I don't need game systems being computers, mouse and kayboard and all, too.... So yeah, I collect toys more now then games, though I do have an impressive amount of old games still... And I do agree its obvious toys are declining much like movie theaters to DVDs in terms of sales... I still feel imagination through toys is a better idea for our kids then gaming...at least for a while. Seriously, when I see a 6 year old chatting on a cell phone with a friend while prepping their iPod and playing a Nintendo DS lite...I just look on in disbelief. |
