Definitely for the nostalgia. I got Joes from '82-'87 and have most of them still. I got out when the getting was good before the neon years.
It was actually the Star Wars POTF line in the mid 90's that got me back into collecting as a MOC collector of course.
Then, McFarlane Sportspicks came along and made me an opener and MOC collector.
The GI Joe 25th collection has now turned me into an army builder as well as a MOC an open collector.

It started when I first started college, and got nostalgic about a number of different 80's toy/cartoon series, primarily Transformers. At the time I was also starting to get heavily into real-time strategy games and that, combined with the 80's nostalgia, I got me to thinking about my collection of G.I. Joe figures from years past (actually all COBRA figures). I started thinking again about all the different COBRA troops and vehicles I had as a kid and what roles they might play in the RTS games I found myself addicted to.
So, I started collecting vintage stuff off of E-Bay at first and then the ARAH line in 2000. The JvC line came next and that's when I started army building Vipers and other COBRA troops, as well as vehicles. I've continued to steadily increase my COBRA legions since then and haven't stopped. My army stands at over a 1,000 different COBRA troops from RAH to JvC/New Sculpt to 25th/Modern Era.
And yes I'm still also hooked on RTS games too.

At first I was not goin got get into collecting anything, especially Joes. That is until I started setting up my collections on shelves to look at and remember the good old times. My mother had at some point ordered me to get my crap out of her basement storage so like a good son I did. Amongst my crap was a USS Flagg. I knew about it so said well I would hate to lose this and took it with me. What I did not know and what got me back into collecting Joes was that inside the boxes was a huge mess of Joe stuff. I had more Joes than I had originally thought left to me (I had been robbed years before and what I thought was the majority of Joe stuff was stolen). A couple of years later and some really good eBay finds for cheap I was able to reconstruct my Joe collection. Now I stay in it for the fun of collecting my childhood again (and so I can have large armies to play with).
Next on my list is vintage Star Wars, Transformers, MASK, MOTU...

I never stopped toy collecting. It slowed down for a period during highschool because of several reasons, the biggest being I had no money, the other being I ended up getting into wrestling hardcore and money went to buying t-shirts, wrestling tickects, and alot of video games, but I still bought transformers every now and then. Got into college and started working, and my toy collecting slowly came back. Started displaying cool anime toys and mcfarland statues in my dorm room (went to an art school so this stuff was pretty hot) but then came the 200x he-man toyline, and that was the first line i had to collect everything from. I bought some joe stuff, marvel legends, and transformers during this time too, but when 25th anniversary came along, as well as transformers animated, and now motuc... i collect WAY too much now. ive actually stopped collecting transformers and only pick and choose RoC figures now, but im still buying/displaying/collecting.
Funny story. Not 2 nights ago I was in target at around 930 when some random guy walking by the toy dept. turns down and asks me "Are you buying these toys for yourself or your kid?" I say "Myself, why?" He goes "See, I was lookin at these toys the other day and said, Man, these toys dont seem like their just for kids anymore, alot of them are bad ass!" I laughed and said yea, alot of these toy lines are bought more by adult collectors then kids nowadays, he laughed and said he may get into collecting some of them too.
So who knows, nostalgia hits people at the darnedest of times

I didn't have a girl friend.
Alley Viper attached to the Strike Team Urban Division 82nd.
Cobra wants you! I'm looking for some ruthless Vipers to fill the ranks. Joes need not apply.
