You could say the characters are stuck in the 80's. Other than a few armor bits, they are basically Sunbow Joes. Without some Classified specific background or media tie-in, they are still linked to the ARAH storyline. When G.I. Joe branched out, the corresponding media made it clear that the new story was different from ARAH. Unless I missed something, that hasn't happened with Classified, as of yet.

If Hasbro would have followed the original Hama comics , we would have gotten dark rated R Joe movies and deeper, fleshed out ,continuous stories for Alot of Characters. Thats True ARAH. Instead we got superhero wannabe movies. And IDW crap. Classified figures are a breath of fresh air. Most of the released figures look bad ass. I think Hasbro has a few movie figures for the SE Origins as well. Which from the still , looks like a darker more realistic type of movie. Here’s hoping.

I think you're you're overestimating Hama's Marvel run. It wasn't that dark or deep. Snake Eyes is literally the only fleshed out character from that run. Anything extra you learn about any other character is based on how they are related to SE. Stalker is one of the first Joes and his background is SE's LRRP team leader. We never get anything about his time as a gang leader and why he joined the military. The Marvel run was basically Six Degrees of Snake Eyes. The Special Missions books tried to add some edge, but were still PG. IDW tried to switch things up with G.I. Joe Origins, but Hama's continuation of the Marvel run is what's still going.

I’ll also add that things don’t have to be “dark” and “edgy” to be good (not that I find anything particularly dark about Hama’s writing- in fact, it’s pretty basic and often mundane). It’s useful for bad movies as a crutch and to trick adults into watching things based on kids stuff, like most of the Dark Knight Trilogy, but not necessary for a good filmmaker.

GI Joe is too vehicle driven to go all 6". We might get a Trouble Bubble or a Ram, but I don't see a Skystriker or WHALE making it to 6" scale. It's just a different animal than Marvel or even Star Wars.

We were BARELY getting vehicles as is, and the Skystriker was the largest thing we'd gotten since the 2009 film. Even if Hasbro hadn't done any sort of scale change, the modern retail market just isn't vehicle friendly. Even Star Wars struggled HEAVILY to retain its vehicle assortments, and it is a much bigger brand than Joe.

In my opinion, clinging to Baroness, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Duke and Cobra Commander has hurt the brand. Don't get me wrong, I love the characters I grew up with and can't wait to buy them in Classified form, but instead of constantly rebooting them and dragging them on for 3 decades, they should have either killed them, or allowed them to retire and be replaced.
Snake Eyes should have died by 1989 at the latest, before they turned him into an unstoppable killing machine devoid of personality (the Boba Fett Syndrome). Allow him to train an apprentice or two, then kill him or let him retire to his cabin and live out his years. Like someone else said, if we follow Hama's canon, then these characters should be in their 70's and 80's now. It's either that, or reboot a 10th time. Fanboys might hate the idea of a Baroness with grey hair and crow's feet, but I love the idea. Let her retire to a castle in Romania or something. Bring in fresh blood. Don't be afraid. Were the Joe creators afraid to take chances in 1984? They said "fuck it" and gave us Zartan! For some reason, 80's kids had the greatest childhoods, yet it seems like sometimes that creative spark missed us. I watch "The Toys That Made Us" on Netflix, and I see what these guys in their 30's were doing in the early 80's, and all we can do is recycle the 80's, over and over. I wouldnt mind them getting old but would still like them involved. IE: A panel of a young girl walking into a room and in the foreground shows a old woman who turns out be baroness or her great grandmother type of deal. Same with Storm Shadow. He should be the the grandmaster of the arashikage by now and Snake Eyes should be retired in a cabin petting timber's f4 generation pup.
