Well, as a kid, back when I actually played with the toys, I dreamed about having tons of cobra troopers and a squadron of skyhawks etc. In order to have huge battles that reminded me of what I saw in the cartoons. However, I knew my mom couldn't afford that.
As an adult, Ive never seen the point of troop building, however, I could justify it in these ways: It looks awesome in your display case to have a whole squadron of Vipers/snow serpents etc. , if the toys are based in a movie like star wars or RoC, you can bust out you vidcam and do a stop motion version of the entire film, scene by scene using the figures. When no one is looking, you can put on your PJs, bust out your army and have that huge battle you always dreamed about, if you have kids, you can play with them, and show them how us oldtimers used our imaginations, back before PS3 and Riddilin, or you can set up extensive dioramas and post the images on a website where geeking out is considered a virtue and held in high esteem, by guys like me.

I aim for multiples of six, because six is a nice even number and is more or less the same size as a real squad or section of troops. The most I've gotten (and will probably ever get) is 32, to make a nice sized platoon. Even then, it's only ever been a few examples, and they were newer figures (the old TRU Infantry and Viper Pit sets). With the vintage stuff, I have to make myself stop at 12 because it gets REALLY expensive REALLY fast (mint CGs, Vipers or BATs go for $30 easily)! Usually it's six for the more specialized troops.
With the 25th line, I stop at six, because of the amount of repaints out there (e.g. I can have six original BATs, six red-faced BATs, and six battle-damaged BATs and they all look great together. The different CGs are easy to do this with too).
I sort of justify troop building because it's actually quite an old hobby with what I think is a distinguished history. It's basically the same as collecting antique toy soldiers, which is a much older and established hobby. (You know, the ones made of lead or other metals.) You could even compare it to the ancient Chinese "Terracotta Warriors"! It all boils down to the same appeal.

Well, troop building is something I do because it wasn't something I could do as a kid and seeing how I always loved the story (original comic line) of the Crimson Guard, I thought I would focus my troop building on them. I'm up to 128 total CGs on my display with 10 or so still in their various packages (single, comic, 3-pack, 5-pack) and it is pretty much my pride and joy. I also have about 70 various 'blueshirts' on my display, as well as 10 Vipers, but when it comes to the rest of the troop builders and depending on what they are, I go anywhere from 4-6 of them including some kind of leader ie Snow Serpent Officer, Red Ninja Leader, Resolute B.A.T. I found an easy way to make the Python Patrol Officer stand out and that was simply to paint his helmet black.
Basically, troop building is the shiznit!!!
