As to why I had the items in a storage facility. I collected a lot of different superhero items and comics over the years and didn't want them overruning my house. I have since sold or traded a lot so that I can keep the rest in my home. |

I also had a storage unit theft, about a decade ago. Long story short, thieves took my items to various stores in the area and tried to return them. Since there was no receipt, they were given gift cards instead. In the investigation, it was discovered most items were obviously no longer in the computer system and they were given well below market value for what they took.
Thankfully my insurance covered it, I bought back my items through various channels (these were all modern era toys, nothing vintage was stored there) but the lesson is to never use a storage unit for collectibles. And always check your insurance policy. |

Why the hell would you have so much stuff in a storage unit anyway? I have most of my Joes in a closet, and feel kind of bad about not dislaying them all. I can't imaging why you'd hoard $30k worth of toys in a storage unit.
I'm not in anyway saying it's okay, or that it's his own fault. Just not understanding the hoarder mentality. |

I’ve never understood why anyone would pay to store their junk, including toys. What’s the average storage cost? $100 per month/$1200 per year. After 10 years you’ve paid $12,000 just to continue to own it. How much does your stuff have to be worth to make it worth spending $12,000 to keep it? And if it’s worth that much, you’re an absolute fool to leave it in a storage locker.

People can steal stuff from your house, too.

The best part about one of the guys that stole my stuff out of a storage unit was that he tried to sell it to a store I new well. The guy came in wearing a Marvel hat and a DC t-shirt. Who does that? The owner immediately new he was a poser so the owner picked up a Spectre figure and asked the guy the name of the figure. The thief said Dr. Doom. Busted.

One word, insurance. Unfortunately most of us don’t insure our collections. Theft is one problem but a tree limb through the roof with rain or a house fire can strike pretty quick. Photos of your collection help if you have insurance.

The owner called me, and I went to the store and caught the guy in the act and had a couple of deputies come and arrest him on the spot.
