The reason I said "nearly identical" is because Hasbro's figures are not *radically* different in design from the ARAH originals. Scarlett isn't African-American, Roadblock isn't in a pink accelerator suit, Snake-Eyes isn't in a rainbow costume.
So an option that said "close to ARAH but a little different" could have applied to what Hasbro actually did. This is a starting point to say what would you prefer of TWO options. Not to say that you wouldn't prefer an as yet undefined third option. It tells us whether Hasbro is on the right track, or they went too far away from ARAH. Another poll can come later to flesh out more specific concepts for redesigns. Also, an option without a physical, real-world example to point to is going to be filled in by people's imaginations, giving it a definite selection bias. I'd prefer to stick to options where I can point to examples of existing figures/designs to go by. So, Renegades or Resolute or Sideshow 12"-style could've been other viable options. I'd like to see an updated take on the classic designs, done with a bit more realism than what we were shown today. Certain characters like Flint, Beachhead, and Snake Eyes don't need much, but others like Scarlet and Shipwreck are in serious need of some redesign. They should leave Cobra alone all together, unless they're considering such classics as Raptor and Crystal Ball. I'm new to modern Joes, but to use them as an example, I like the POC and non-film based Ret figures a lot, I really can't stand a lot of the design choices for Renegades. 25th looked cool to me at first, but over time I've come to find them to be too ARAH inspired ( and kinda poorly made, at that). My problem with today's revealed figures are tough to put a finger on, to be honest. It's like I can look at individual aspects and say "yeah, that's not bad", but when taken as a whole, they're just off. I will say the Snake Eyes nearly won me over, but my first reaction to RB and Scarlet was almost revulsion. In short, a yes, no, or not at all poll is too limited for me. |

The poll isn't trying to find out everyone's ideal version of 6" though. This is simply asking if, given these two choices, which is better to you? It's to try and tell us something, not everything.
I know people say they love "POC." I have a hard time nailing down what "POC" is. POC morphed right into the 30th line with many figures carrying over in the assortments. And the 30th definitely did not have all "realistic" military-looking updates. It had Sci-fi and Lifeline in it. Not to mention, Low-Light and Steel Brigade were in POC and looked like pure ARAH updates. The later Retaliation figures had many direct ARAH remakes like CC, SE, Night Viper and SS, but also had some POC-style redesigns like Crimson Guard or the desert Duke. To me, I just consider POC and 30th and Retaliation a continuation of 25th. The only characters given that sort of darker-colored costume redesign were already made in their original look in 25th. So it's like getting a new costume version of a figure in ARAH. Let's not forget that ARAH itself started out with hardcore military designs and even in later years had Hit & Run and those "classic collection" military looks near the end. G.I. Joe was always a mix of military realism and sci-fi/fantasy. The emphasis shifted from year to year in the 3.75" lines but was always flexible and could move back and forth. So to put "POC" as an option in the poll seems unworkable. I don't believe there is a single design aesthetic that "POC" applies to. And I don't believe whatever the "POC" aesthetic is was not present in other iterations of 3.75" Joe. Last edited by JediJones; 02-21-2020 at 03:06 PM.. |

Shipwreck has had a few more modernized versions over the years. He was a gray diver in ARAH later on. And the early 2000s era had him in the skull cap. His old costume is certainly not unrealistic, just perhaps outdated. But even though Polly is not realistic as an accessory, I can't imagine Joe fans voting down inclusion of Polly.
So far poll is 2 to 1 for ARAH. If the poll was biased, I would've made it easier to pick the ARAH choice, which I voted for, by writing "closer to ARAH" instead of "nearly identical." But then that rewritten choice could be picked by anyone who even wanted one tiny change on Hasbro's new figures to make them "closer to" ARAH. I want people to make a hard decision here that can allow us to conclude something clear. If ARAH designs, as they are with little change, beat the new designs, then that tells us something very clear. It does not mean that anyone voting necessarily has exact ARAH designs as their ideal versions. Just that Hasbro's new designs are less liked than they are. Later on MotU got a Club Grayskull to capture that cartoon appreance. I’m holding out for that or a classic Hasbro ARAH toy line ascetic sub line.

The poll is fine. It asked a very simple and straightforward question. I will not be picking up any 6” Joes. Not a scale that I want. That and the pictures that have come out of them are not doing it for me. I’d have preferred a more ARAH look but I still wouldn’t have gotten them.

I voted for more ARAH like. For me, the idea of modernizing the classic designs translates into something like the POC Cobra troopers and Vipers, Low Light, etc. The classified figures stray a little too far from what I think a sweet spot for this line could be.
