Disclaimer: I've no idea where best to put this one, let's see what happens...
I recently came into posession of an very old vehicle from a GI Joe-affliated international line. I had one as a kid all those years ago, got rid of it like an idiot in a clear out in my twenties, and only just found a replacement, in a battered old box and still in its bags unassembled. Naturally, I'm chomping at the bit to put it together and slap on the decals and yet...I haven't. Not because I'm viewing it as an investment to sell on in another 20 years or something, no. Instead, I'm thinking about the fact that there can't be many of these things left in the world and this one's parts are still on their sprues, all the hard to find bits & bobs that easily get lost are present, etc. So would it be feasible (or even worth investigating) to have the pieces scanned as some kind of archival record? I'm not looking to rehash old arguments about reproductions* or rip off Hasbro (I believe they own the IP now but almost certainly have never had moulds of the vehicle in question, they never released it themselves and it's not been seen anywhere since in over 30 years). Rather it's just a great little vehicle with some cool play features that may soon be lost to time. And I'm suddenly feeling an odd sense of responsibility to look into what I can do for posterity and fellow fans long term instead of just gleefully putting it together and adding it to the collection. * (but yeah, no doubt there may be a few folks out there with one who might be glad for a way to obtain afforementioned lost parts, I noticed very few for sale have everything and nowhere offers repros for it) Just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation? Doesn't necessarily have to be Joe related, in fact it would make more sense to me to do something from a much rarer/more obscure and forgotten toyline. Hell, I don't even know the first damn thing about 3D scanning/imaging, maybe an entire vehicle can't be done anyway! But can't hurt to ask, right? |

Did I miss something here. What vehicle is this? Why wouldn't you mention it?

You can buy scanners (turn-table or hand-held) for a few hundred dollars or up to thousands of dollars. Spending more will generally give better scans. It's a neat idea but it'll cost you good money and time to do it.

I think it's a great idea. I haven't tried 3d scanning yet but you might look into a rental unit and take some time to scan your entire collection in one fell swoop.
You might even just consider creating a silicon mold of the originals and just make copies for yourself and keep the original parts on their sprue. Personally, I can't bring myself to paint originals unless they have been ridden hard and put away wet. Even then, it feels wrong. I certainly would feel bad about pulling that peice of history apart at this point. I personally have modeled a lot of replacement Joe parts in Fusion360 and just 3d print them. It sure would be nice to be able to share that work out in the open OR just be able to buy faithful Heritage/Vintage runs from Hasbro without paying an arm and a leg. |

I’d appreciate it if there was a repository of scanned & corrected digital models of all the parts of my favorite toys.
