Hi all,
I never knew the GI Joe Collectors Club and Figure Subscription Service existed until I joined HissTank earlier this month. If I've understood everything, both of these things are now dead? I was hoping someone wouldn't mind taking a few minutes to tell me about them. Some examples of the kind of things I'm curious about: Who ran the club? Were they affiliated with Hasbro? How were the FSS able to sell GI Joe branded toys? Who designed the toys for the FSS? How did they get them manufactured etc. I'm not overly interested in collecting the FSS figures (I'm only really after vintage o-ring figures) but I definitely feel like I've missed out, and they did release a couple of bits that I may try and pick up at some point. 8 |

The Club was ran by Fun Publications/Brian Savage. the club was Hasbro approved. It was the official club. The Club offered the FSS. Many different people put together the part ideas for the club/fss figures. They used Hasbro factories.

1. Brian Savage ran it. I can't remember the other 2 people. You can look up the last Joecon Club panel on YouTube. I think McDowin posted it. There is a pretty good summary on there of the origins of the club. 2 and 3. The club paid Hasbro a licensing fee to produce figures and sell them as official Hasbro product. 4. The FSS figures were initially designed by the club members. I think they paid BFS and later 4 horsemen to sculpt new headsculpts. The club was limited to certain parts at certain times as Hasbro gave them an "available parts" list each time the club requested to make figures. Certain characters were off limits, which was mandated by Hasbro. I think the last 2-3 FSS's had some figures designed by Bobby Vala before he was let go by Hasbro. 5. The figures were made at the same factories that made the retail figures for Hasbro. The prices of the last few FSS's and final 12 went up steeply as the factories charged more to make short runs of figures. They were not making retail figures at the time, so it cost more to run the molding machines for small orders. I could give a lot more info, but that's the bare bones info for now.

Seems a real shame that after so many years, it now doesn't exist in any form. Though, I have seen a few comments around that suggested not everyone was happy towards the end. Not trying to start a fight over why the club closed or anything like that. |

Hasbro basically ended the club. It was supposed to end in 2016, but Hasbro extended them for 2 years. Then in 2018, The club closed, and all the people that cared about GI Joe were fired at Hasbro. That leaves us with the current hiatus, and probably a change in what ever Joe toys Hasbro will put out for the SE movie. If it ever gets made.

Also, the Club made several of Hasbro's Concept Vault figures as a part of their FSS and Club Membership figure line. Which was cool, just not the army builders because that part was expensive.

Ah, I didn’t realise that it was mostly Hasbro wanting to pull the plug. So sad when a company with that much money doesn’t see the value in helping a club that had been running for so long and served die-hard fans.
I guess it wasn’t profitable for them... but still. When you’ve got £10 to your name, everything is about money. When you’ve got £10mil... not so much. |

I think most of it has been covered. Lanny Latham and David Lane were the other guys but there were many hands involved with Fun Pub.
Also I am almost certain Hasbro was considered continuing the license beyond 2018 and I think Brian turned it down.
