when i ask this question, what i mean is with all the different varients and outfits being released nowadays it seems like the joe line is turning into the star wars line from 10 years back.how many different dukes do we need or how about artic assult storm shadow with mask or no mask/tattoo or no tattoo.hasbro seems to put out more variants then newer characters.does anyone agree with me when i think that maybe hasbro is going a little overboard with what they are putting out now with the joe line?

It standard procedure for Hasbro to put at least one of the most recognizable characters in each wave to attract the children.
For 25th/ME it was Duke, Snake-Eyes, Cobra Commander, & Storm Shadow. For ROC it's Duke, Ripcord, Snake-Eyes, & Storm Shadow.

Overboard, yes. But, it's cheaper than making all new characters. I keep wondering about the difference between the way things were done in the 80's compared to today. They put out waves of almost completely new figures each. One or two may have been a character in a new outfit, not counting the Nightforce and Tiger Force stuff. Maybe that where they learned to do the variants.

When I was a kid I'd rather have a new character than another version of a character I already had. I'd be willing to bet kids feel the same way these days.

I hated star wars until the clone trooper came out. Now I can't stop buying them. But yes the figure release is a whole new game compared to the 80's release waves

I believe it is.
And unfortunately, like star wars, I have quickly lost any interest in the new stuff. The prices are also getting too high to hold my attention. Aside from a figure here or there, I just don't care anymore. I pretty much focus on vintage figures at this point. |

I don't think the duplication of characters is that high for the ROC line thus far through the first 5 waves of figures.
There have been 47 figures released on single cards (51 if you count the 4 TRU Exclusives). There are 21 duplicate figures: Duke - 4 Snake Eyes - 4 Storm Shadow - 4 Heavy Duty - 2 Ripcord - 3 Scarlett - 2 Baroness - 2 This makes 30 unduplicated characters and 19 of the "appeal" characters thus far. You have to expect at least one Duke, SE and SS per wave to appease the kids and collectors, I remember people on here saying they didn't like Wave 4 (Charbroil, Night Adder, etc) because it had no "traditional" characters in it. I have seen a lot more Star Wars characters that look like the same figures being reproduced over time. So far, the GI Joe ROC figures do change despite being the same character.

I can't say that Joe figures are the next Star Wars for one big reason:
With present day Star Wars figures, it seems that if you wait long enough there will eventually be a figure made of any character that was in the background of a SW comic panel--not even one of the films or cartoon. With Joes, sometimes were lucky to get any new figures/molds at all.

I also think the GI Joe ROC/POC etc line is drawing a fair comparision to Star Wars. At least it's better than saying the ROC is the same as the Indiana Jones figure line.
The biggest difference between ROC and Indiana Jones is there is another movie coming out whereas at the time the Indy movie was the end of the line.
