So, Quick Question. Why are GI Joe vehicles Modified designs? did they have licensing fees to avoid?
I mean most toy cars didn't have that problem until the mid 80s, was it just a case of early adoption of Licensing fees, or a case of legality? |

I think they couldn't make vehicles exact to scale, as they would all be too big. So they had to modify them some.

that makes sense, but then... the Rattler's alternate config in relation to a A10 Warthog. is that modification to the original design out of necessity, or playability?

You don't get the VTOL feature without the mod.

It’s definitely about playability. They made some realistic vehicles, but most real - life vehicles make boring toys. Kids liked the glass canopies, turrets, and detachable baby vehicles.
I recently saw a young boy playing with Legos. The commercial on YouTube said something about “awesome features.” And when the boy played with them he said, “look at all the awesome features!” That’s why they give the Rattler extra engines and turrets and things like that. Kids like getting excited about the awesome features. |

I imagine it was partially trying to make it somewhat realistic and also using creative license to have fun with the design and add playability.

Yeah, I think it was a combination of copyright laws/licensing fees, adding features for the kids, the creative imaginations of designers that was driven by the sci-fi narrative within the real-world story of GI Joe, as well as the final product approval being overseen by the marketing/budgeting departments. A lot of interesting elements there at earlier stages of some vehicle designs had features and gimmicks that were dropped to reduce cost, and down-sizing scale was probably just as much a part of that. And, it was a kid’s toy line - a small bedroom can fill up quick with true-scale vehicles, and when it comes to parents buying them, I imagine the size and cost of larger vehicles was a deterrent to buy them.

It comes to scale and licensing. For example, the Skystriker was designated as XP-14F instead of F14.
The Dragonfly obviously had to be renamed as they couldn't name a Joe vehicle a Huey Cobra.

It's all about the play value. Notice the earliest vehicles are near exact aside from over-sized crew compartments (most Joe vehicles are really about 1:24 or so). Starting a couple years in they realized it was more fun to turn things up a notch or ten: if an A-10 is awesome, an A-10 with dorsal turret and VTOL is better. If a Blackbird is cool, a Blackbird with missiles and bombs that also looks sort of like Firefox is better.

Yeah, I would say the Cobra version of the A-10 is cooler. Had the tilt wing VTOL and dorsal mounted twin 20mm close self defense AA guns. The Night Raven was essentially the Blackbird(complete with that piggyback drone aircraft attachment) and combined with the fiction MIG Firefox from that early 80's Clint Eastwood "Firefox" film .
Many of the GI JOE/Cobra vehicles and weapons were inspired from real world vehicles, some conceptual, some actual prototypes and some produced. The ASP for another example was based on Oerlikon Diana mobile Anti-Aircraft pod, but the guns were a combination of the Gepard 35mm AA guns and some shortened versions British/NATO era L7 105mm's. |
