Having acquired several modern era JoeCon sets and exclusive figures in recent months, I'm curious if there's a consensus on which years were done best or worst --- not as far as personal preference for the actual character choices, but as far as quality control and design effort for the chosen characters.
I don't have much experience with the 2011 box set except for picking up one each of the Python Patrol Trooper and Tele-Viper. Some of the Joes had 2007-style mid-forearm swivels and the Mission Brazil theme wasn't something I had in my childhood, so I passed on the rest of the set. The crazy resale prices on them also helped push me away. I think the 2012 Operation Bear Trap set is widely regarded as an excellent set, both in design and quality. The paint apps are carefully applied, the level of detail is good. I also like the 2013 Night Force and 2015 Tiger Force sets quite a bit. In general they had good design effort and QC. The 2014 Eco/Zombie set and 2017 Battle Force 2000 set are somewhere in the middle for me, though the easy-out enemy set that's all B.A.T.s in 2017 places it below the 2014 set that showed more creativity. I would rank 2016 and 2018 much lower than the rest. Despite coming several years later, these sets do not seem to have taken advantage of learnings from past sets and opportunities to improve various elements of design and production. I'd also suspect that by 2016 the Club knew it was on the way out and it started to show in the level of effort and expense they were willing to invest in the product. The 2016 Sky Patrol figures appear to have more of their design budget put into the backpacks rather than the figures, with really cheap paint on the helmets that practically rubs right off, has fuzzy edges or is slightly off-target, accessories like knives and sidearms that lack sheaths/holsters on the figures, and a couple with shallow heel pegholes that don't attach well to the stand pegs but can't easily stand without support due to the backpack. 2018 I'd rate low because of the widespread headsculpt paint issues (missing eyes, crossed eyes, slopped eyes, missing facial hair, etc), the Laser Viper backpacks that still have ARAH post placement so they sit too high on the back of the modern era Laser Viper figures, and the excessive mold re-use bringing very few new elements to the modern era molds/parts catalog. If I were to rank them from greatest to least, I'd go with: 2012 2015 2014 / 2013 2011 2017 / 2016 2018 What's your ranking and why? |
