I've looked around for this because I'm sure I'm posting a question that's answered somewhere else, but I've had no luck.
How do you tighten ankle joints on modern figures? I'm having trouble with POC Cobra troopers, some ROC figures, and a lot of Marauder figures. The ankles are just so loose the figures eventually fall over, even if you get them to stand for a bit. For a 6" figure (like MOTUC), I would rub Pledge Future in the joint. But I wondered if 3.75" figures are too small for that trick.

An old standby for tightening joints in general is to build up the post with layers of superglue. In a case like this, you can put glue in the empty socket then insert the foot and keep spinning it while the glue dries. There is, of course, some risk to this method.
You can also grease the foot and post withe Vaseline, fill the socket with hot glue, then insert the foot. Let it cool, then trim off the slop that oozed out.

I didn't realize the feet came off.

Soak the lower leg in nearly-boiling water (I microwave a small glass of water for about 90 seconds) for about 10-15 seconds, then grab the foot right at the hinge and wiggle/pull it out. If it's fighting you, it needs more heat.

I've also been hearing furniture polish works too.

It definitely works on MOTUC figures, but the larger size means there is more of the joint exposed.

Ok wait, are you saying the joint is loose in terms of rotation around the leg or in terms of the hinging action? If you're talking about the feet coming off of the hinge, they don't (except for rocker ankles). I was talking about the feet coming off of the leg.
So exactly which action is loose?

The joint I am talking about allows the foot to move up and down. The ones that are loose cause the figure to fall forward as it slips a little.

Ok, those hinges do NOT separate from the foot, so don't try. For that, I've always heard you put a drop of superglue into the hinge and keep working the hinge while the glue dries. It may take more than one treatment, but supposedly it'll bring friction back to the joint.

I believe the foot up and down joint is a hexagonal peg in a hexagonal hole. That's why it clicks to position (sometimes to an undesirable tilted position which makes the figure hard to stand). It's similar to the knee joint in that respect. And given the rubber nature of the foot, the peg in there is not tight to the hole, and has some loose give--which is what I think you are describing. I had this problem with the Retaliation Storm Shadow.
I did use the Pledge Future stuff on this joint for SS, and it worked for the looseness, although it may have taken a few apply-and-dry iterations. I think it's the best solution, since it is the most viscous material (over nail polish) that lets it bleed into the hard-to-get-to joint, and much less dangerous of fusing together (over superglue). It may be less effective than on the MOTU Classics because the Joe feet are more rubbery, but Joe's are smaller hence lower center of gravity for tipping over. Since you've used the Pledge Future, you should be familiar with its shininess if letting it dry on the exposed parts. But the key is getting into that peg joint to tighten up that peg gap, so you can keep wiping the exposed parts while the entire thing is drying. The other thing you can do (if falling backwards) is really stretch out that knee joint to get is as straight as possible, and may overbend slightly. I've notice that the POC troopers legs are still bent in their natural "straight" position. That is why I was amazed that you got so many of these guys standing without problems. |
