Hey guys.
This is actually my first post, but I've been reading over the forums for a few hours now. I've been trying to pick a bunch of the 25th Anniversary figures that I missed in my local stores, and in doing so I've come to find out that a lot of the figures have a foil and a non foil version, but for the life of me I can't find out what the difference is. Is one rarer than the other? More valuable? Does one imply variant? Anyway, if anyone could shine some light on thie for me I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance! |

are ytou collecting bc you hope to sell them one day, then buy foil bc that is what mst collectors would want, if its play time at your place like it is at mine then get whatever one you want, as far as I know the difference is that the foil cards look better, and they do, as far as the quality of the figures I think they are much the same. I had a tough time too when I first started collecting these, there are some figures however that dont have a foil card, there is the foil card, the cartoon card, the comic card, and the resolute card, then there is the lame canadian generic card and there is even a foil card found in canada that has no art work just the red explosion flame. I guess it all comes down to what you want really. hope this helps. Bugs me when people dont respond to a thread.

The foil appeared for a year or so for the 25th anniversary. After the anniversary, they switched to the non-foil (referred to as Modern Era). The foil ones are typically more desireable simply because they were first. However, for the most part, the carded figures themselves are identical.

The first 7 waves of figures were released with the 25th anniversary symbol in the top corner of the card, and a silver foil underlay that appears at the edge of the card, and behind the blister bubble. Those were produced in fairly limited quantities, and are more valuable MOC.
After wave 7 was released all cards (except Major Bludd who was originally intended to be in wave 7) were released on cards that replaced the foil underlay with white borders and yellow behind the blister. The change happened because the 25th anniversery was now becoming the 26th anniversery, and Hasbro wanted to change the style. The non-foil cards are dubbed 'modren era' though I've never been sure if that's an official name or not. Most if not all of the earlier foil carded figures were re-released on the non-foil cards though there are some notable exceptions. FOIL CARD Note the silver edge and behind Roadblock. The foil versions were Wave 1 through Wave 7 and then Major Bludd from Wave 8 was also a foil version. After that, the rest of Wave 8 on through the last Wave(13) are all comic, cartoon, Resolute or International cards. They did revisions of almost all of the Wave 1 - 7 and Major Bludd figures though.
There is also a variant of the regular 25th foil version, the foil embossed version with a more shinny mirror-chrome look to the border and G.I.joe lettering accross the card. The foil embossed also has a slight edge or lip on the foil and is slightly raised above the regular card. These are rarer than the regular foil versions.
