I bought a Social Clash two pack from BBTS. I plan to use a custom head from eBay that I will try to paint on the Baroness from the two pack.
The Black Widow was just there because I was testing scale. I own a couple of Black Widows I picked up cheaply years ago to try to make a custom head for the awful 3.75" Mara Jade Black series figure. Right now, I'm trying to figure out if a Black Widow head painted blonde would be a good replacement for the ROC Cover Girl, whose head is much uglier in person than I hoped. Also, I am very fond of the 25th Vipers. They are closer in design to the classic Viper costume than the PoC/30th onwards, and still hold up well visually. However, most of them have somewhat pre-posed wrists which may be annoying; the axis of arm rotation is at an odd angle; and, the goggles are usually a separate piece that falls off all the time.

N your journey you might run into loose joints (likely hips), this tightens em up without much risk (superglue can be dodgy):

I think your idea for replacing Cover Girl's head seems sound; they really managed to out-do themselves with how unappealing they made her head. That said, have you checked out any custom casters for replacement heads yet, instead of planning on cannibalizing a head from an existing figure?
If I had more confidence in my painting ability I might have looked more seriously at a custom head. I also don't have a dremel tool so my options for redoing the connecting hole are more limited. |

I actually like that Mara Jade, but I totally get why she tends to take heat. Hey, jscott...welcome!! I've kind-of neglected G.I. Joe as a collectible property as of late. It's not that there's any shortage of things I want...I have a handful of vintage figures along with a ton of modern stuff, but that's about it. I guess I get side-tracked by my other collectible loves... (lol)
If it were me just starting over, I'll echo what others have been saying...if you're interested in starting a modern collection, you can't go wrong with the Retaliation figures, the 25th Anniversary stuff (if you're into the classic-style packaging), Pursuit of Cobra/30th Anniversary, and the 50th Anniversary lines. I'd also recommend the G.I. Joe Club subscription figures...they can be pretty pricey, but alot of them are what I would consider definitive modern takes on some of the characters... My personal goal is to plug some holes in my POC/30th collections, as well as to army-build the 30th Anniversary "blue-shirts", as you are, along with the Vipers also. (I know, I have my work cut-out for me...) I'd also love to get my hands on some more club figures, along with some convention exclusives. To my knowledge, I don't think I've yet to get any convention figures, and there's so many I'd love to have. (I forgot to recommend those too, by the way...) Where the vintage stuff is concerned, I've decided to return to my snobbish roots...if I can't get any still MOC or sealed in baggies, I'm gonna do without. I just want a mint/loose/perfect collection of vintage figures. So how many do I have so far, you may ask? I have a grand total of...six, I think? (lol) Good luck, jscott, and remember to come on here from time to time to keep us all up-to-date with how your new collection's going. And...I'll try to contribute more on here and not lurk so much. (lol)

Oh, I almost forgot! I may have mentioned this in other threads, but...another thing I wanted to do is actually army-build the 30th Anniversary Steel Brigade figures. I think I have one MOC somewhere stored away, but I'd like to have a whole division of them, perhaps eight or ten...no more than twelve at the most. I was never crazy about the Joes having nameless troops like they had on the cartoon show, but I love the Steel Brigade guys as back-up troops for the Joes...I love the idea that the Joes are so elite and bad-@$$ that even their nameless back-up grunts are teched-out and bad-@$$, too.

Besides eBay and here, where are the best places to look for figures?
I should have some updated pictures soon. I'm just waiting for a few things to arrive from eBay wins. |

Welcome to the plastic-sickness...
There are some fantastic figs out there. If you are sticking to modern I highly recommend picking through Pursuit of Cobra / Renegades / 30th anniversary figs. There are some fantastic Joes there. Sci-Fi, Lowlight, jungle Duke, and Renegades Airtight and Law are absolute gems. For Cobras there is the IG, money bags Destro, Vipers, and the Shadow Tracker fig are all fantastic. |
