The prices on eBay are hit and miss. Usually you do get better deals dealing with people directly, but eBay's stock is usually hard to beat.

So, is your plan to convert that Black Widow to a Baroness, or keep her as-is? I love being able to mix Marvel characters with Joes, but be aware that Marvel's 3.75''/4'' line is also running on fumes right now...

The Black Widow was just there because I was testing scale. I own a couple of Black Widows I picked up cheaply years ago to try to make a custom head for the awful 3.75" Mara Jade Black series figure. Right now, I'm trying to figure out if a Black Widow head painted blonde would be a good replacement for the ROC Cover Girl, whose head is much uglier in person than I hoped. |

Consider collecting all of Cobra Command, its pretty cool having them backed up by a bunch of troopers (Vipers in my case). I sold off 3/4 of my Modern figures, but Cobra Command I'll always keep.
So that's C Commander, Destro, Baroness, Tomax and Xamot, Serpentor, Dr. Mindbender, Storm Shadow, Zartan, Major Bludd--and I throw in Firefly and Wild Weasel for good measure.

Do you have a local toy store or a comic shop that deals in toys? Probably could find a great deal with a local business owner especiallay if you complete a deal in cash.
I bought 6+ carded figures for $5 each and complete good versions of vintage characters for $15 from my comic shops. The toy shop has a lot more variety and will look for specific pieces. Have fun! |

I've never had much luck with local stores. Most of the comic stores in my area seem to focus on Magic, board games, or, well, comics.

Hey, welcome jscott! So what years of the old stuff did you get when you were young? From the looks of it, you were there from the start (82-83). Was wondering where your cutoff line was.

I was there basically from the start, although I did not have the straight arm versions of the characters. Going through YoJoe just on a nostalgia trip has really reminded me just how many of these guys I had, particularly for Cobra.
It looks like I petered out in 1988 and 1989. The only 1989 figure I can remember having was Gnawgahyde (and he definitely came from my stepbrother's collection). But I had a ton of the 1988 guys (almost all of them from what I can tell). Looking at the YoJoe archive brings back a lot of memories. I remember my Cobra Commander had a mostly silver neck (obviously sloppy paint) and I loved it because it was more cartoon accurate (at least in some episodes). I remember getting Baroness as a gift when I had my tonsils taken out. I distinctively remember saving up whatever it was you needed for Hooded Cobra Commander. I remember thinking the Rattlor was the biggest Christmas present ever (my cousin got a GI Joe plane that same year, but I don't really remember it being the Skystriker). I remember losing my Cobra Eel while camping. I really wish I hadn't lost all these, although I have to say the modern figures have really come a long way. You had a good run! So based on this, and based on what you've already got in modern form, you'll want the following, without even having to see them in person. They all have the same aesthetic bulk, sculpting, and articulation of the figures you've already got.
Cobra Viper v28: I think you'll want this guy--same body as the Shock Trooper with different forearms. I myself wasn't a big Viper fan, like the Cobra Trooper, this one looks so fantastic as modern figure. Snake Eyes v54: same sculpting aesthetic as your Cobra Troopers (same legs even). This figure was almost revolutionary for the modern line, and like the Shock Trooper you're also trying to get, its parts are reused over and over following his release. Storm Shadow v49: again same excellent sculpting aesthetic as SE, Cobra Commander, and the Cobra Trooper. Unless you hated Storm Shadow, trust us that he is must have. Firefly v26 or v28: either one is fine, pick one that you find the most reasonably priced, and don't look back. They've got the exact same sculpt, both painted a little different (with each having their slight pros and cons). Getting Firefly and Stormy--along with your CC, Destro and Baroness--give you a nice Cobra 5-Pack Ultimate Editions, and is a very good place to stop if looking to keep things short and sweet. Like you, I'm prefer the modern 6" action figure, which allows more detailed sculpting and more articulation. but the 3.75" Joe stuff from 2011-2014 took the scale to its highest level. Anything previous to those years will be a bit substandard in size, bulk, sculpting details and articulation. You'll want to peruse in person, and see if they're worthwhile. But then be warned: it's the cardbacks and old-style packing/artwork that will get you. That is the cliff to watch out for, and where things can get out of hand. |
