I'm going to give all of my modern-era Joes to my friends' son. My original intent was to collect and display modern-era versions of the major characters on both sides but I just can't justify paying 100+ dollars for Zarana, Sgt. Sluaghter, Cover Girl, or any number of other exclusive-type figures.
I originally thought about selling them but I want someone to get some enjoyment out of them the way they were originally intended. Not to denigrate collectors but I'd rather see them get some play the same way I used to use the vintage era figures. Speaking of which, I may switch to collecting vintage figures, as it appears to be the more affordable (and enjoyable?) path, but I won't do anything until I pay these surgery bills off for my broken arm! |

Do you absolutely HAVE to have Zarana and Sgt. Slaughter? I mean, I understand the completest mindset but that shouldn't end your love for a toyline/collection. I live on a strict budget and there's no way I can get those figures but hey, I'm still going to grab every piece I can. Just my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth.

Honestly, some figures, I just make my own cause I can't justify the prices. Voltar was one I know I'll never get so I made my own. I made my own Slaughter (made several different versions) until I finally bit the bullet and got the SDCC Triple T one. It cost a bit but was still a great deal from a member on Hisstank.

Are you a 100% sure the kid will even want to play with the joes? No tv series and no video game, odds are they will just get shoved under his bed lol. There any many easy customs of slaughter ect that look great and dont cost a fortune. My advice, think on it for a year and then decide.

Collect what makes you happy... if you aren't getting it with the modern Joes, then go back to the vintage...
I was lucky to have gotten the hard to find ones early before they shot up in price... however there are a few I'll probably never have, but that's okay because I can customize anything. As far as Cover Girl, you can make a way better one with Marauder Inc parts than what the Club did.

He'd definitely play with them. No kid isn't going to take advantage of free toys, even in today's day and age. He's basically my nephew; I got him a Lego pirate ship and he takes meticulous care of it. I think it's because it was from someone outside of the family so he feels obligated to treat it differently? I don't know, I don't have kids so it's just a guess.
Xerofall is right, as far as my situation is concerned. It doesn't bring me any kind of satisfaction. I have a sort of an OCD-completist mindset, too, so not having a couple of semi-major characters is a big deal to me. I could probably comfortably buy them (seeing as how the expensive ones are a small percentage of what I want) but I'm not sure if it's what I want to do. |

Its your choice. I've just been annoyed before over holes in my collection and let things go that I later regretted. Just be sure you're %100 okay with it.

Just playing devils advocate here...
If you start to collect vintage are you going to go after gold headed steel brigade, starduster, or the build a cobra? There are expensive vintage figures too. |

Not really. More just the major figures. But when I started thinking about how even an '84 Storm Shadow in good (white) condition would be cheaper than a loose 25th Footloose, it made my decision easier.
