I ask, because today I was reading about the 'new' attempt at a GIJoe Movie - and how the '80's nostalgia' has been all the rage for about 5 years now. Got me wondering - how long of a timeframe will nostalgia be viable? I remember going go James DeSimone conventions in the early 1990's - and wondering who all these old guys were that cared about 12" Joes. Have WE become that now? Are WE the old guys that the younger generation doesn't understand - and really doesn't care about our fondness for 'our' childhood's memories?
And where does it end? We are getting a FSS Overkill? For a character from the 2000's? Is that nostalgic? Discuss? |

There is a reason that advertisers group people into categories. 18-49, so we have a little time left but not much. Those in that 18-49 group are the most likely to have the most disposable income. Once we leave that coveted group, we become mostly irrelevant in the eyes of content creators, except for maybe CBS which always has skewed towards an older demographic. However in recent years the 18-49 demographic created in the fifties is itself becoming less relevant with so many choices of online entertainment for everyone.

Yeah, not just Joe fandom but for the most part action figure fandom in general is quickly going the way of baseball cards and model trains.
But we had a hell of a run! |

Nostalgia for a particular product, time period, or feeling will last as long as those with the power to create whatever product is being sold, maintain their power. This power is directly related to sales.
When their peer group is no longer a majority of the market making the purchasing decisions, then they no longer have the financial backing to dictate whatever is being created. The next generation/wave then comes along, and creates products to appeal the nostalgia of for their peer group. |

Not necessarily. Fans all too often forget just how LONG GI Joe has maintained a following. The original 80s line lasted TWELVE YEARS. There's two, maybe even THREE, "waves" of kids that know and experienced that iteration of GI Joe. The first waves of Joe vs Cobra hit right around the 20th Anniversary mark, and was itself FAR more successful than many long time fans give credit for.
We're still in the "30 year" nostalgia cycle for the 80s (of which, GI Joe ran through pretty much the ENTIRE decade), so there might yet be some gas left in that tank if Hasbro wants to pursue that angle. Hell, Bumblebee will be set in the 80s, so if that does well, maybe there is room to cast the GI Joe film in the frame of deconstructing or homaging the Reagan-Era patriotic films?
