Hello, and sorry if this is inappropriate to post, but I really need some direction, and my latest thought has been to see if I can get help from some of the forums my late husband used to visit.
I lost my husband last year. He was an avid toy collector and has a sizable collection of mostly action figures and vehicles including GI Joe, DC, Marvel, Start Wars, He-Man, TMNT, and a few others. Some items are in boxes, but most are loose. I have included a picture below of a portion of his toy room to give an idea. I would like to sell much of his collection, but just don't know how to start. I am not a toy person myself, and perhaps except for a few larger, boxed items, I can't imagine selling much on eBay. I also don't know the values of the items, and am not sure how to find an appropriate appraiser. There are no collectible toy stores in my area. I am wanting to sell the collection for the benefit of my children, and considering this is really my husband's legacy, I want to try to sell smartly to get the best return. I am not in a hurry, but also as a new mom with a full-time job, I don't have endless hours to dedicate either. Thank you for any advice and/or referrals you are able to give. I live in Southern California, in the Coachella Valley area. Again, if this is inappropriate to post, I do apologize. Last edited by bacasino; 06-03-2018 at 05:49 PM.. Reason: forgot to add picture |

First of all, sorry to hear about your husband.
If I were you, I would try to find a local collector who has a general idea what things are worth. Someone you can throw a few dollars to in order to help. In the last few weeks, I've sold about 40 items on eBay, and even that few items can take A LOT of time. Find someone with the time and knowledge to help. Whether you sell on a site like this, or eBay, you'll need help. Once again, sorry for your loss. |

My two cents on the toy collection: -To sell "smartly for the best return", you have to sell the collection yourself, and each item individually. For a collection that size, it will be a part time job. - A "appraiser" willing to look at the collection, is going to be a toy collector or store owner who will offer a wholesale price. For me, I would not want my collection to be a family burden. Years ago I had a talk with my wife with this scenario. I suggested she slowly take portions of the collection to a local eBay consignment store. Best of luck. Last edited by stillagijoefan; 06-03-2018 at 08:53 PM.. |

You can research each item on eBay to know the sold value, and then sell there, or the Lego could be sold on Bricklink. Possibly your husband kept a spreadsheet somewhere listing his collection? I expect you won't be able to identify which specific version of a figure is which. We could help point you to resources for the GI Joes if you want to do the work yourself.
If you have a list, you can get an offer from Brian's Toys Price My Toys Mobile App | Toy Collectors Price Guide Brian's Toys. Like others have stated, you can get a collector to come in or a toy shop and they will give you an offer on everything, but it won't be close to market value. Only selling each item individually, will give you anything close to market value. Selling all of the GI Joe to a GI Joe fan, and all of the Star Wars to a Star Wars fan, should get you better results than selling it all en masses, but would involve dealing with multiple people. Feel free to ask more specific questions if you need. We can show you the kindness we will others to show our spouses and family when our time comes. |

Sorry to hear.
But yes your going to need some help. Someone who can catalog everything and price it. Selling the whole collection intact is an expanse most average collectors can't afford. And the businesses willing to dish out larger amounts want to make money off of it...so their gonna low ball you. Its just business. But yeah to maximize your return its gonna take someone with knowledge and time and your going to have to probably poney up some fee for the help...maybe an item or two as compensation for the help. |

Sorry for your loss.
As others have said..It will take a minute to do this. Just a quick glance of the picture gives me the impression that even though most is loose. you'll still get a good amount but you have to really put in some work. just a quick assessment and your looking atleast 9k off jump...just looking at the picture. to give a idea i see : https://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTU-Roboto...wAAOSwALtagwG2 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Masters-of-...YAAOSwHnFViJYk https://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTU-Classi...0AAOSwywRZ~E4A https://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTUC-Battl...AAAOSwRyda4zgK https://www.ebay.com/itm/GI-Joe-G-I-...gAAOSwl9RaA970 https://www.ebay.com/itm/COBRA-NIGHT...oAAOSwPTlbFKum https://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTU-SY-KLO...gAAOSwvHRa83qU

I’m very sorry to hear about your loss. Your husband was a member of our community and so your loss is our loss as well.
You can save some time and fees by contacting a collector etailer site that may be interested in buying loose or open collections if you like. Not sure if Bigbadtoystore.com buys open collections but surely they will buy any sealed in box items. Brian’s Toys normally sells Star Wars but I have seen him sell sealed in box vintage toys from any toy brand. Smalljoes.com does sell loose/opened figures. The only down side would be that in order to turn a profit the sites would only offer you a fraction of what the collection is worth in order to sell the collection at current values and make their end. However you’d save yourself a considerable amount of work in listing, boxing up, and shipping all of those items. It would be a bit more work but you could avoid listing fees and still sell at top dollar by listing the items on For Sale threads for each brand, maybe list G.I. Joe times here, Masters items on He-Man.org, etc. Lastly the advise of doing your research on eBay is very sound. I never purchase an item on eBay or internet site with out cross referencing the prices on each. I’m an experienced EBay seller with over 1000 sales exclusively in toys and 100% feedback. Feel free to message me here with any questions about listing items. I’d be interested in the Fortress of Fangs- the green monster faced play set with the white fang looking stalagmites and the purple monster throne with the large black bat wings in the lower center of the photo. You can send me a private message here when you are ready, if it’s an item you’d consider parting with. I’m a generous fellow with a big heart (check my feed back)and I’ll do right by you, your late husband, and your family.

I personally would try to find someone to do this for you. They'll take their cut, but that means they'll try to get as much as they can for you because it's more for them.
They have estate auctioneers, etc, I'd try to find one that specializes in toys and collectables. I lost my wife a few years ago and it got me thinking about my collection. I actually have it in my will that my family is to contact some of my Joe Bros and let them take what they want and sell the rest.

Sorry for your loss.
Judging by the picture, this will be a very big task to sell them. I just recently sold my friend's collection of toys from her childhood on Ebay for her as she was leaving town for good because her father passed away and didn't want to just throw away her toys. They were from toy lines I knew nothing about so it did take a while to catalog what she had and look up online what they were and if they were complete or not before I started listing. I knew there were some items that were worth a bit and tackled those first. If I lived in your area, I would help, but unfortunately that's not an option. I do have some options for you and I'll PM you.
