Figures absolutely make the most sense. Sure, the existing/dwindling fan base is built in and has figures to go with a new vehicle already, but Hasbro has to jumpstart new figures as well at some point. To go from zero product from the brand at all to a multi hundred dollar vehicle would be absurd. The brand needs to walk in baby steps, not just try to sprint out the gate.
The sensible approach would be a set of classic figures, maybe the original 13 redone. |

At Toy Fair in NYC today, Hasbro launched "HasLab" which requires 5000 fans to pay $500 in advance for a 3.75" Jabba's Sail Barge by April 3rd. If this works, one could only dream of the potential for modern-era vintage themed GI Joe playsets:

Interesting idea.
BUT I honestly think getting any sort of Haslab Joe item is a long shot. SW simply has a MASSIVE fan base and cash influx that makes this sorta project possible. And Joe? Well what can I say as much as I love Joe we currently don't even have product. I mean not even DTC stuff. Granted I'm not saying its impossible. I think it would take the Jabba barge doing really well, and the Joe 2020 film getting a massive push (and maybe doing really well) to get anything Joe from Haslab. |

We are a week into it and they have only gained a few 100 more backers. 1933/5000 today. Rebelscum has it on the top of their page, not sure where else Hasbro is advertising it.

Less than half with 37 days to go
Won’t happen The initial price is way too high. They should have started of 1. Smaller. 2. Less expensive. And does any other kick start charge tax as well? |

I’m still on the fence. It they would show how the painted, finished product will look I might be motivated to commit, but it looks too bland at this point.

I thought about it, but SW is not one of my main collections. And aside from spending the $500, I am really running tight on space. Really need to save space for my Joes. The only new series I am picking up is the Figma figures Overwatch and Attack on Titan. Also can use the funds to pick up the King Arts Mazinger Z figure, and that runs north of $300. At this point it does not seem probable that they are going to make the 5,000 goal. They would need to average about 85 subscribers daily to get there and it seems the pace has subsided. They will have to have a major jump in the last days to make it.

Its tough for me to gauge this as star wars really isnt something i touch. Its an awesome setup and i may plunk at some point but... budget is getting really spread out here and its getting a little tough to justify purchasing today for 2 years out.
For the time being Marauders is the focal point... |

They will reach their 5000. I’d expect a lot of last minute sign-ups. Honestly, we should all hope this sees great success given the potential for future endeavors.

I think that we are missing the point of Haslab. The reason they started with Star Wars is that they have movies out and product in the stores and this is just for US customers as they are not shipping internationally. They will not have any Joe stuff until the movies comes out and then I can see them brings something to Haslab. Right now thought they are going to be looking at the lines that have media out so Marvel should be next and possibly more Star Wars. This is a avenue Hasbro will use supplement offerings instead of bringing new stuff to market.
Also with the Star Wars licensing I think that is why the cost of the barge is so much and I hope that with their own lines Hasbro will have a better cost structure for collectors. |
