For you guys that army-build, what constitutes a division or platoon? In my attempt at re-building a collection, I want to do some more serious army-building for the first time in a long while, namely with the modern troop-builders. When I was a kid, I just bought whatever I could find, when I could afford it, which wasn't all that often. I was lucky enough to have two '86 Vipers back in the day, though, and ever since I always wanted to army-build them. Nowadays I'd like to army-build the 50th Anniversary/POC version (I know...) (lol), but in my mind, ever since I was a kid, for some reason the magic number seemed like twelve for a division of any given army-builder. Now I've seen some impressive, even massive action-figure armies over the years, and I don't want anywhere near the number of figures in some other collections I've seen, but at the same time, I'd like to have more than just half a dozen. So what exactly is the official number for a military division of troops? Is there an official number? Incidentally, I've also considered army-building some troops for the Joes for the first time, too. In the past, to me they never really needed faceless troops, and I know that Hasbro has tried to introduce the concept at various points along the way with varying degrees of success over the years, but I now feel as if the Steel Brigade figures would make an excellent army-builder-type for the Joes, if they're not meant to be so already. It seems as if I read a file card or something somewhere that implied they were indeed like the Joes answer to all of the different Viper-style troops for Cobra, but I can't be sure about that. Again, as a kid, I sent-off for my very own Steel Brigade soldier patterned after my own personal dossier...but he never came in the mail. (lol) Sad story, I know. What's even sadder than that, especially considering what they go for these days, is that I also at one time ordered a mail-away Wolverine, complete with Cover Girl, and it never came, either. And I could never decide if these were somehow lost in the mail, cancelled by my mom because we needed the money, or if some local kleptomaniac just helped himself to packages left on our front porch. (lol) Wouldn't it be incredible though, in all reality, if they finally showed-up one day?? I've read stories before where that kind of thing has happened, where people get letters or packages decades after they were supposed to because of a mailing or clerical error. One can only dream... (lol)
But I digress...I'm interested to see what you guys think about what a good number for army-building is, or if you even have any thoughts about it one way or the other.

Dragasses has given you the legal definition...
But for Joes, they take up a lot of space in a diorama. I got sick of having tons of guys in bags, since for every 3-4 army builders you'd have 3-4 named characters. So I have 5-6 of each of the PoC style blue troopers and Vipers, then not more than 2-3 of other army builders that I like. Do you really need 27 techno-vipers? |

On a side note, I also thought I'd like to have the 30th Anniversary/POC (?) Viper that sports the blue arm-guards to serve as the unit commander or corporal, like the color of the arm-guards denoted rank. I just wish there was a unique Steel Brigade figure that could be similarly distinguished as a higher-ranking officer or unit commander.

Great question! I didn't realize that there was such a specific definition of the troop sizes.
I like to have at least 4 of each troop type (depending on their cost) and more of the ones I really like. I have at least 10 each of Hazard Viper, Strato Viper, and Night Creeper. Plus far too many BATS to count. |

I have slowly converted my 25th troop builders into POC troop builders. I have limited the specialized vipers and troops into groups of 6. i.e. 6 Green Night Vipers, Red Night Vipers, Shock Troopers, Data Vipers, etc.
I decided that I need a crap load (25+) of the basic troopers. So I have extensive 50th/POC CT's, POC/30th/50th Vipers, and 25th IG's (Someone needs to guard Destro's castle). I also have gotten several (12+) SB's over the years. The only other figure that I have 12+ are Zombie Vipers. You can never have enough Zombie Vipers. They make for great dios. I have gotten a few other troop builders for customs too, I.e. DG Shippys make a great FLAGG crew.

Troop building is a hell of a drug.
But a lot of it depends whats managable. Space is always the issue. For me? I find 6 to be good. Its better looking than two. And a little beefier than 4. |

Yeah it it is. I seem to be over it, for now...
For me, the magic number was 8 or 9. That way, you could break it off into smaller squads of 3 or 4.

Personally I build speciality vipers to two or three but have many cobra troopers. It depends on your budget and space at the end of the day
