Personally I think new-sculpt are the best to let kids play with. They're sturdy, most don't have too many removable parts, and lastly, they're the cheapest to replace if your nephews are a little rough on them.
With my nephews, they can play with some of the vintage stuff and some of the ME stuff indoors, but outdoor play, new-sculpt all the way. |

My 2 cents. I think the older o-ring figures are more durable. minus the crotch and thumbs. But due to years of use/abuse and just plastic age might feel more brittle. If you look for some o-rings from the Valor VS Venom line you can get some really nice remold stuff for the more popular characters and figs. Plus you can get them in a box if you want the kids to have something to open.
The newer 4 inch stuff seems ok for the most part I find the 50th anniversary stuff to have more issues than the 25th/30th/POC lines. For kid play though these are not rare figures you can get some excellent characters from the newer stuff. I do however think that for kids they come with TOO many accessories that get lost easily. Things that were molded on in 3 3/4 years are now actually accessories. Missles for bazooka, pistols in holsters etc. As an adult I appreciate this so much more, but these are day one lost for kid play. those pistols are just too small to not lose. |

I know I'll probably get heckled for this, but for kids, I'd suggest starting off with The Corps, as they're intended with kids in mind. They're rugged, have pretty good articulation, decent accessories, fun (albeit exaggerated) designs, and are priced to move. The current figures trend towards 4'' instead of 3.75'', so they scale more with modern figures than with vintage. They're a bit chunkier than your average modern-era figure due to the construction and aesthetic design. They don't necessarily fit well into most Joe vehicles, and not all accessories share well between brands, but on the flipside, Corps vehicles nearly always accommodate Joes well, and are also very affordable. They're a good brand to test the waters with before spending money on more expensive modern-era 4'' figures, but also nice enough that if you do decide to move onto more advanced lines, they won't get left behind entirely.
If you want to stick with the Joe brand name, I would also suggest buying from the New Sculpt era (2002 - 2006). The figures have a great balance between versatility, durability, and accessory design, and are fundamentally compatible with the vintage 80s/90s figures, although the art style tends to drift from the classic look a bit.

Walmart has that Kid Connection(I think that is what it's called) has some somewhat cheaply made looking figures and has some decently made vehicles as well as non-military vehicles, plus a military base.

Thanks for the feed back everyone. I think I'm going to start out buying some used 4" lots on eBay for the boys and pick up a few classic 3.75" display figures for myself.

Especially the new Corps! line that is hitting store shelves in a matter of days / weeks. * They have the same level of articulation as the average ARAH 3.75'' or New Sculpt 3.75'' GI Joe. *They are made of slightly flexible plastic so they won't have thumb or crotch cracking issues. * Vehicles are plentiful at your local walmart or other brick and mortar store. They also accommodate both modern and classic Joes . * They have screws holding the torso's together so your kids can do what you did as a kid...unscrew and mix and match parts. Outside of them NOT being made by Hasbro the New Corps! line really is the best value going in 1:18th and built for actual play. |

The vintage guys will tell you one thing and the ME guys will tell you another. O-Ring will always be the "orignal" small scale action figures of my childhood.
With that said, I now prefer the modern 4" figures to the classic O-Ring. Yes, playability of the figures from the 80's was great..but I rarely "play" with my Joes. The modern sculpts, weapons systems and overall look of the ME are just better to me. The ARAH joes are a bit "chubby" and squatty looking and really are more of a "toy" IMO. I appreciate the O-Rings, still have some and love the 80's ARAH vehicles. When it comes to display, poseablity and overall look, it's hard to beat the ME figures. I say you go with what you like and what calls out to you. You can't go wrong with your choice...because it's your choice!

I recently just decided to get rid of my 4" modern era GI Joes. I was just going through them and realized I just wasn't into them anymore. I do like all of the vintage vehicles they re-released from 2008-2015 so I have been buying those up as well as alot of the ARAH figures.
Also in 2000/2001 they released quite a few of the ARAH Style O-Ring Joes and they were also scattered in with VvV and Spy Troops. There are plenty of great troop builder sets in those years and the Comic Book packs from 2004-2006 also released ARAH Style O-Ring joes. Alot of the 2000/2001 sets can be found on Ebay for around 10 bucks MOC. |
