Hi, first post in these forums.
Recently found my old toys and started collecting again. Decided to complete my Tiger Force to begin with but ran into a bump when I noticed there had been re-releases of some vehicles. The Tiger Shark and Tiger Sting are easy to spot the difference on in a photo but what about the Tiger Rat? I've reed that there is retooling done to fit the new size figures better but can't find a side by side comparison anywhere on the internet. My dilemma. I want to buy the -88 version and not ending up paying for that version and finding out it's the -09 version after it has been shipped across the world from somewhere. |

Most of the parts are interchangable so it's not a guarantee, but look at the black missiles. The Classic missiles are more pointed than the re-issue. Same goes for both the original and python Conquest re-issue. The canopies are most likely shinier on the re-issues, too.

But from what I reed there is some difference at the cockpit area and turret to allow the 4" figures to get in it? Same as in the Rattler. Haven't seen any picture describing it, only text mentioning it.

I am sure there are some differences, but I don't have specifics. Any retooling done for the newer version was likely done internally to acommodate the height not width of the figures. The missiles are an easier tell than the cockpit since there aren't any interior shots on the sales sites and even if there were you would have to compare side by side to tell. The missiles might be an easy swap for a scammer, but cost-wise it doesn't make any sense to do it. Check the missiles and you'll likely get the right vintage. I just went through the same thing with the Conquest.

Here are a couple of things I noted as I put mine side by side and looked for any differences I could find:
1) Main canopy connection point on the 88 is slimmer and the pegs ar smaller that connect to the body of the aircraft. 2) Paint on the 09 version on the tan nose and the black stripes are different than the 88. The brown on the 88 is darker than the 09 and the black tigers stripes are glossier on the 09 and more of a matte on the 88. 3) Cockpit on the 88 is narrower by about 1/16 of an inch, and the plastic for the seat is lighter than the 09 version. 4) Small Missiles are pointier on the 88 than the 09. My 88 version was recently unboxed, so it's in mint condition. There are slight variances on the turret gun, but not enough to use as a single point of reference for comparison. I hope this helps.

The 09 one's bottom middle piece that holds the wings and rear landing gears is glued on and not removable.
The 88 one, that was something you needed to assemble (also the case with the vintage Rattler). The plastic around the seats is less so that the new figures can fit. I can't remember how it was achieved, either the sides didn't go up as high or they made the actual seat wider and the sides were narrower. As others have mentioned, the missile tips are more blunt. The two piece missile is also different. The newer one, the diameter of the peg of the missile tip is wider than the vintage one so that is actually not interchangeable. Found this out the hard way cause my 25th Rattler was missing one tip so I bought a vintage one off Ebay only to find that the vintage one's peg was smaller.

This may be obvious but the year of manufacturing is on the bottom.
Ask for an additional picture of the Hasbro date stamp from seller. |

Ah, of course. I just know a lot of things that reuse molds still has the old copyright in there so wasn't sure that would be the case.

I honestly didn't realize they did it for this. I found it funny the tires still say Cobra VTOL on them, but then again, the premise is they did capture a Cobra vehicle, so it makes sense.
