New to modern Joe collecting, just curious if what I've experienced thus far is common to all modern Joes or just the earlier years' figures (2007-2008).
The ones I've acquired so far are from that vintage and 9 out of 10 can't hold their weapons securely at all. Handguns seem to be the worst culprits but even rifles seem extremely loose in their hands. The figures were MISB, so is this an effect of the age of the figures and their gimpy hand designs, or are all modern Joes this way? Trying to set my expectations accordingly since this has significantly reduced the anticipated posability potential of the figures. Thanks in advance. |

Bottom line up front answer is yes, the designs got much better. As time and sculpts progressed, trigger fingers were eventually sculpted in position to allow for better grip on weapons or separated from the rest of the hand to allow for better flexibility to fit grip. Some of the later 25th figures did have better sculpting, followed by Rise of Cobra line but it was somewhat inconsistent.
Once the line hit Pursuit of Cobra in 2009/2010 and onward the sculpts were much better on hands and weapons. With the addition of articulation allowing the wrists to bend, even better poses were possible. Although the head is grossly oversized, one of my favorite figures as far as compatibility with the weapons included was the Resolute 7-pack Scarlett. Her shoulder and elbow articulation combined with the hand sculpt allowed for perfect pose with her rifle. Some of the figures from the Pursuit of Cobra and 30th/50th/Retaliation anniversary did suffer from the angle at which their torso sculpt allowed for shoulder range of motion. With some, this was worse with their armor/tactical vests. One such example is Retaliation Ultimate Duke. As damn cool looking as he was, his elbow articulation was lacking and when his vest is on the shoulders cannot move to allow his arm to cross far enough in front of his body to allow for holding his weapons requiring two hands. The issue can be mitigated with an exacto knife by cutting away at the vest and strategic cuts on his forearms and lower biceps. Anyway, these are just examples. The modern figures, in my opinion, boast benefits/cool features which far exceed the problems. |

Later figures with wrist articulation will hold their weapons better than earlier figures. For example, the 25th anniversary Viper figure has no wrist articulation, as opposed to Pursuit of Cobra (POC) of 50th anniversary Vipers. 25th anniversary Wraith is one of the worst, when it comes to holding his gun. Although they have a great design, the Retaliation & 50th anniversary Night Vipers also have issues holding their rifle. It's still possible, but it takes some patience to get them in the hand, just right.

Doesn't help that they took what should have been a compact P90 and made it the size of a stand-up bass guitar. Yeah, I was a little disappointed there...

I could never get Wraith to hold his gun right. I just gave up and bagged him away. I have not taken him out since.

Well, on some figs, you get the reverse effect on their hands. As in sitting in the package for so long holding a weapon, the hand or hands would stay stretched out to where sometimes the weapon can fit in and stay in and can't hold any other weapon in the hand, unless it's the same width of the weapon that the fig came with. Then there's also the paint issues on the knives and swords. It's like they painted the blade and stuck it in the sheath and when you pull it out, some paint comes off of it and on the knives, the blade feels tacky.

Anyone got a link to a tutorial showing where to make cuts on the torso and arms to improve the range of motion?
I seem to remember one with photos showing how to mod an Ultimate Duke. It was possibly done by Obi Shinobi, but I can't find it anywhere now. |

The more rubbery plastic used for both the hands and the weapons do not help the stability. No broken thumbs though.
